CBSE Unveils Pioneering Curriculum in Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has inaugurated a meticulously crafted curriculum focusing on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) tailored for students in Classes 3 to 8.

Inaugurated by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on Wednesday, the curriculum prescribes a commitment of 50 hours per year for students in Classes 3 to 5, and 100 hours for those in Classes 6 to 8.
This structured approach ensures a gradual and age-appropriate integration of crucial CT and AI concepts into the educational framework.
For the younger cohort, specifically Classes 3 to 5, CT skills will be interwoven within conventional subjects, including environmental studies, utilizing the textbook The World Around Us (TWAU), alongside mathematics.
Learners will be engaged in fundamental competencies encompassing logical reasoning, pattern detection, and sequencing, facilitated through interactive methodologies such as puzzles, games, and practical exercises.
Each class will be augmented by a resource book designed to align chapter-wise with standard curricula, thereby enabling educators to assimilate CT into their teaching seamlessly. Assessments will correlate with primary subjects, ensuring pedagogical coherence.
Conversely, the curriculum for Classes 6 to 8 will delve into more sophisticated CT abilities, foundational AI principles, and interdisciplinary projects.
Of the annual total of 100 hours, a division of 40 hours is earmarked for advanced CT learning, 20 hours for AI basics, and the final 40 hours for hands-on project-based endeavors.
This segment of the curriculum aims for students to apply CT when tackling intricate issues, familiarize themselves with AI tools, and comprehend real-world applications of AI.
Essential themes such as digital footprints, bias, privacy, and fairness will also be integrated to nurture responsible digital citizenship among learners.
Interdisciplinary projects are set to amalgamate disciplines like mathematics, science, social studies, and English, propelling students to devise innovative, data-driven solutions to real-world challenges.
Assessment methods will concentrate on project presentations, assignments, reflective journals, and other tasks, underpinned by clearly defined evaluation rubrics to ensure consistency and transparency.
This groundbreaking curriculum was devised by a 10-member expert committee under the leadership of Dr. Karthik Raman from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.
The committee’s assembly included luminaries from esteemed institutions such as Azim Premji University in Bengaluru and Dhirubhai Ambani University in Gandhinagar, among others.
“The committee convened over nine meetings spanning three months, and engaged in consultations with officials from NCERT, technology specialists, principals, and computer educators from CBSE-affiliated institutions,” stated CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh.
Implementation is set to roll out in more than 32,900 CBSE-affiliated schools starting with the 2026–27 academic year. Pradhan lauded the initiative as a “transformative step” toward nurturing future-ready learning, fortified by structured modules, educator handbooks, and solid assessment frameworks.
“As India solidifies its position in the globally recognized arena of technology-driven computing, this curriculum will empower students to engage with and shape a digitally transformative future,” he declared.
School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar noted that this endeavor positions India among nations such as China, South Korea, Finland, Estonia, and Singapore, which have integrated AI education into their schooling systems.
He further emphasized that “efforts will be made to translate the curriculum into regional languages, ensuring broader accessibility across all states and Union Territories in the country.”
