Decatur County Memorial Hospital Enhances Therapy with Innovative Ultrasound Technology
(Greensburg, IN) – The Hospital Foundation of Decatur County has successfully executed a grant aimed at bolstering the resources of the Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) Rehabilitation Department through the acquisition of the Butterfly iQ3, a state-of-the-art therapeutic device.
The Butterfly iQ3 is a portable ultrasound apparatus that interfaces with smartphones and tablets, facilitating real-time imaging at the point of care.
Particularly revolutionary in the realm of speech-language therapy, this device empowers both clinicians and patients to visualize crucial tongue movements and positioning within the oral cavity.
Such movements are not externally visible, rendering a precise explanation challenging without this visual enhancement.
“The Butterfly iQ3 has proven to be instrumental in elucidating the anatomy and dynamics of the tongue during speech therapy sessions,” stated Olivia Wilmer, a Speech-Language Pathologist at DCMH.
Many speech sounds hinge on accurate tongue placement that patients are typically unable to see. This technology facilitates a shared visualization of those movements, thus aiding patients in comprehending the necessary adjustments for producing specific sounds—especially difficult ones such as the ‘R’ sound.
Real-time visual feedback allows us to ascertain which movements are effective and which modifications may advance their progress.
This functionality significantly enriches patients’ understanding as they strive to meet goals associated with articulation, apraxia, dysphagia, and dysarthria during therapy.
“This introduces a level of accuracy we previously lacked,” remarked Heather Riga, another Speech-Language Pathologist at DCMH. “It empowers us to customize our strategies to better support each individual patient.”
Foundation members were fortunate to witness the technology in action during a recent therapy session.
“It is profoundly gratifying to witness community philanthropy directly enhance the specialized care provided at DCMH,” commented Mandy Lohrum, the Foundation Director.
“Through initiatives such as these grants, we can invest in our clinical teams, amplify specialty services, and ultimately enrich the experiences of the patients and families we serve.”

This grant fulfillment underscores the significant impact that local donors make by investing in the health of their community. The Foundation’s efforts continue to bolster initiatives that elevate patient care and furnish care teams with vital resources to enhance community services.
