National Science Foundation Launches Initiative to Enhance AI Literacy Across the United States
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has unveiled a groundbreaking funding initiative aimed at empowering all Americans to comprehend, utilize, and innovate with artificial intelligence.
The NSF TechAccess: AI-Ready America program seeks to broaden access to AI knowledge, tools, and training, ensuring that every citizen can actively partake in and reap the benefits of the burgeoning AI economy.
As an initial measure, NSF, in collaboration with key federal partners—including the Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA), the Department of Labor, and the Small Business Administration—will allocate funding to create AI Coordination Hubs in each state and territory across the U.S.
This effort, informed by the White House AI Action Plan, is designed to bridge the existing gap between the nation’s AI capabilities and the workforce, businesses, and communities that require them.
The initiative concentrates on three critical areas: enhancing AI literacy and practical skills within the American workforce; equipping small enterprises and local governments with the necessary tools and technical support for adopting AI; and establishing hands-on learning opportunities—including internships and project-based programs—that translate AI skills into practical applications.
“The competitiveness of America in the realm of AI hinges on a robust research and development ecosystem combined with access to advanced scientific and technological knowledge for our current and future workforce,” remarked Brian Stone, acting NSF director.
“The NSF AI-Ready America initiative lays that foundational framework—equipping workers, businesses, and communities across all states and territories with the requisite tools and insights to advance together in the field of AI.”
“This initiative will guarantee that every American worker possesses the skills, knowledge, and training essential for thriving in an AI-driven economy,” stated Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.
“Under President Trump’s inspiring leadership, the Department of Labor proudly collaborates with NSF to advance AI readiness, empower American businesses to innovate with AI, and generate prospects that will benefit all citizens.”
“Securing a leading position in the AI domain is paramount to maintaining America’s dominance in defense, innovation, and economic prowess,” said SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler.
“The SBA eagerly anticipates working with NSF and our colleagues throughout the Trump Administration to equip small businesses with training and resources that enhance efficiencies and promote prosperity for future generations.”
“The USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture is honored to partner with NSF in this nationwide initiative, ensuring that every community—including the most rural—can harness the advantages of artificial intelligence,” added Jaye Hamby, USDA NIFA director.
By investing in tools and training tailored to meet the needs of farmers and ranchers, we are cultivating an agricultural future that is more resilient, efficient, and accessible for everyone.
This collaboration reinforces our commitment to equipping agricultural producers with the innovations necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving landscape while ensuring the provision of food and fiber.
The initiative will function through a network of up to 56 state and territory-based Coordination Hubs, selected via a tri-round competitive process.
Each Hub will forge connections with local partners, coordinate deployment efforts, and scale successful methodologies based on local stakeholder priorities.
NSF is prepared to invest up to $1 million annually per Hub over a span of three years, with the potential for an additional fourth year for Hubs that demonstrate a continuing need during the transition phase.
NSF also plans to announce a forthcoming funding opportunity for selecting a national coordination lead, tasked with facilitating collaboration and knowledge exchange among the Coordination Hubs.

Additionally, NSF anticipates launching AI-Ready Catalyst award competitions centered on various relevant topics to pilot and enhance innovative strategies addressing pressing AI readiness challenges.
Responses to the Coordination Hubs funding opportunity are to be submitted by Tuesday, June 23, at 5 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). For further information, register for an informational webinar scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, at 1 p.m. EDT.
