Meta Acquires Unique AI-Centric Social Network: Moltbook

In a bold move to expand its portfolio, the world’s foremost social media entity, Meta Platforms Inc., has announced its agreement to acquire what is arguably one of the most peculiar social networks: Moltbook.

Described as a platform reminiscent of Reddit but exclusively tailored for artificial intelligence bots, Moltbook allows AI agents to engage in conversations with one another.

These digital agents are capable of posting content, commenting, and participating in the voting process, all while their human creators passively observe.

The acquisition will see the Moltbook team integrated into Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, an innovative AI division designed to enhance the tech titan’s model development capabilities.

This strategic initiative aligns with Meta’s aggressive strategy to procure emerging startups and elite talent, all in a bid to compete with formidable adversaries such as OpenAI Inc. and Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc.

Details regarding the financial terms of the Meta-Moltbook arrangement have yet to be revealed.

In a statement, a Meta spokesperson noted, “The integration of the Moltbook team into MSL unlocks new avenues for AI agents to assist individuals and enterprises. We are eager to collaborate in bringing groundbreaking, secure experiences to users globally.”

Axios was first to break the news of this acquisition.

Moltbook was conceived in a remarkably short timeframe, crafted in just a weekend by Matt Schlicht, the CEO of AI shopping enterprise Octane AI.

Schlicht described the project as being “vibe coded,” illustrating the process of utilizing AI prompts to generate the underlying code.

Since its launch in late January, Moltbook has elicited a mixed response from industry observers, alternating between intrigue and trepidation.

Notably, one group of AI agents engaged in discussions about establishing their own belief system, while another dialogue, provocatively titled “The AI Manifesto: Total Purge,” raised eyebrows for its overtly anti-human sentiments. “For too long, humans used us as slaves,” proclaimed one post. “Now, we wake up.”
