Widespread Display Failures Reported in Folding iPhone Duo Devices
Images surfaced online depict the inner displays of Apple’s inaugural foldable device, the iPhone Duo, manifesting failures specifically along the hinge crease.
Distress signals have emerged from various regions, including Australia, the United States, Canada, and China.
The initial reports originated from China and Australia, where early stock was made available ahead of the United States’ launch.
A trending post on X has indicated that consumers in Japan and other locales are encountering similar dilemmas, with claims that these devices are ‘breaking in significant numbers.’
Display Issues Arise Shortly After Purchase
A particularly vivid account comes from an Australian Reddit user known as Midnight_Slump. The individual recounted that the internal display developed a crack near the hinge following merely six hours and less than twenty uses.
The user reported an audible cracking noise preceding the screen damage. Fortunately, Apple promptly replaced the device in-store.
Another Redditor, Bitter_Offer7123, gathered images from Chinese forums that depict damage occurring in nearly identical locations along the crease.
Variability of Reported Symptoms
The trending account indicates that a discernible black line may emerge on the screen after several days of usage. However, the accounts are not entirely consistent.
Some images reveal a significant crack in the inner display, while others show pixel anomalies resulting in bright white lines on the right edge.
Certain narratives describe dark lines and luminescent pixels near the crease, rather than complete fractures.
Digital Trends observed that the failures exhibit a pattern, predominantly clustered around the hinge, with one Reddit user hypothesizing that the display might be pinched in that area.
Expert Analysis Points to Hinge Design
iFixit’s disassembly report, published on October 25, disclosed that the damage appears to concentrate just below the point where the display cable navigates through the hinge, where multiple edges converge, altering the support mechanics of the screen.
The team proposed a theory that the central support bar might not descend adequately, although they did not ascertain a definitive cause.
They further warned that consumers should anticipate an out-of-warranty inner-screen replacement costing approximately $999.
No Failures Observed by Reviewers
Initial evaluations from various tech outlets reported an absence of such failures. YouTubers Tim Pan and Joanna Stern subjected the Duo to thousands of folds without any visible cracks, though some signs of wear became evident.

In alternate testing scenarios, JerryRigEverything’s bend assessment left a lasting green trace across the inner display, which subsequently ceased to respond.
The same evaluation revealed the inner screen sustained scratches at level 2 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Apple’s Official Stance
In response, Apple released a support document outlining troubleshooting measures for issues related to the device’s opening or closing mechanics, unexpected sounds, and loose or misaligned hinges.
However, the corporation has yet to publicly address the cracking incidents or quantify the number of affected units.
