Apple’s Ambitious OLED Transition by 2029
Apple Inc. is poised to revolutionize its product lineup with the ambitious implementation of OLED display technology across five major devices.
This strategic shift aims to enhance visual fidelity, rendering sharper and more vibrant images. According to a report from DigiTimes, the company intends to transition several models of its Macs and iPads to OLED displays, commencing in late 2026 and culminating by 2029.
The iPad mini is scheduled to debut this technology in 2026, while the MacBook Pro is set for an OLED upgrade in early 2027.
Subsequent enhancements will see the iPad adopting this new display in 2027, followed by the iMac and MacBook Air transitioning between 2028 and 2029.
To date, Apple has primarily incorporated OLED technology in its iPhones, Apple Watches, and iPad Pro variants.
The journey began with the inaugural Apple Watch in 2015, expanding with the groundbreaking iPhone X release in 2017.
Notably, apart from the MacBook Pro, which features a mini-LED display, the forthcoming Apple products—currently utilizing LCD panels—promise to deliver advancements in color accuracy, contrast ratios, and true blacks due to OLED’s unique architecture of individually illuminated pixels.
Potential Drawbacks of the New OLED Displays
While speculation regarding the iPad mini’s transition to OLED has circulated for some time, the upcoming implementation will significantly differ from the current iPad Pro’s display technology.
Apple is anticipated to employ a single-stack low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panel for the iPad mini, contrasting with the dual-stack low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels featured in the iPad Pro, which offer superior contrast, viewing angles, and brightness levels.
The question remains whether the iPad mini will adopt a 120Hz ProMotion display, or retain the existing 60Hz refresh rate.
Additionally, the iPad mini is rumoured to be powered by the A19 Pro chip, similar to those in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air; however, speculations suggest a possible shift towards the A20 Pro chip.
Meanwhile, the OLED-enhanced MacBook Pro is expected to debut with an eighth-generation panel, potentially featuring 5G connectivity and touchscreen capabilities.
These devices may make their appearance as early as October 2026, aligning with Apple’s historical trend of product announcements during this period. Intriguingly, the next-generation MacBook Pro could forgo the anticipated M6 chip in favor of initial M5 units.
Revamps for iPad Air, iMac, and MacBook Air
Each introduction of novel display technology generally signals a substantial redesign of Apple products.
Despite the MacBook Pro’s modifications over the past five years, a comprehensive overhaul occurred in 2021, showcasing a mini-LED display alongside a completely reimagined design.
Accordingly, there exists a strong possibility that the iPad Air, iMac, and MacBook Air will undergo revisions in conjunction with their OLED display upgrades.
Although these devices may not incorporate the high-end OLED displays from Pro models, enhancements compared to existing LCD technology are anticipated.
For instance, the inclusion of an OLED panel could allow the iPad Air to become the thinnest and lightest version ever produced.
Given that the iMac underwent a redesign in 2021 featuring the M1 chip, the addition of an OLED panel would mean the design has remained unchanged for at least seven years by the time of this upgrade.
Furthermore, it is plausible that when the MacBook Air receives its OLED display, it could also undergo a comprehensive redesign.
An examination of Apple’s recent design trajectory with Apple Silicon Macs illustrates that both the MacBook Pro and Air were fitted with M1 chips in 2020, maintaining the design of their Intel predecessors.
Subsequently, the MacBook Pro was reimagined at the end of 2021, followed by a similar design ethos in the MacBook Air by mid-2022.

Thus, with the forthcoming Pro model expected in late 2026 or early 2027, a redesign for the MacBook Air, along with display enhancements, appears highly plausible in the 2028 to 2029 timeframe.
