Emerging Trends in Cybersecurity Education at Marist University
Bobby McDonald, a junior at Marist University, expresses his enthusiasm for majoring in cybersecurity, a field characterized by its relentless evolution.
However, the trajectory of his studies diverges significantly from that of students just a few years prior, as the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) redefines the employment landscape for new entrants into the workforce.
“Students possess a unique understanding of how to engage with AI and optimize their productivity,” McDonald remarked.
In response to this shift, universities are actively exploring methods to integrate AI into their curricula.
They are tasked with striking a delicate balance between the necessity of familiarizing students with this technology—given its increasing adoption across diverse sectors—and the imperative to ensure it is employed in ethical and responsible manners.
At Marist, collaboration with IBM is paving the way for the incorporation of AI into disciplines beyond just science and technology, leveraging IBM’s latest innovations.
“Students in marketing, finance, and those utilizing AI for polling can expect to grasp not only how this technology relates to their respective fields but also the nuanced considerations of when it should be deployed,” explained Diane Hart, Associate Vice President of Special Projects and Innovation at Marist.
“This will furnish them with a distinct advantage, as they engage with software that is integral to contemporary industry right within their academic pursuits.”
The integration of AI in regard to career preparedness is also a focus for the state government.
- Earlier this year, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the establishment of the FutureWorks Commission, aimed at ensuring the workforce is equipped to adapt to the ongoing adoption of AI.
- The governor has highlighted the creation of new initiatives at state educational institutions, ensuring that students, employees, and small enterprises can keep pace with advancements in AI.
- Moreover, the governor’s office has revealed plans for large AI development firms to register with the state while adhering to stringent safety standards later this year.
Hart emphasizes that Marist’s objective is to harness AI in a manner that enhances human capabilities rather than supplants them.
Tina Tarquinio, Chief Product Officer for IBM’s z and LinuxONE divisions, asserts that familiarity with artificial intelligence is paramount for the upcoming workforce.
“Our future roles will necessitate the incorporation of AI into our tasks and decision-making processes,” she stated.
“The sooner we embrace this reality and initiate integration—particularly through experiential learning—the better prepared we will be. This partnership is designed to facilitate that hands-on experience.”
McDonald echoes this sentiment, asserting that the insights he is gaining about AI are crucial for his professional development.
“Learning these concepts early in my career will undoubtedly become increasingly vital as we advance,” he concluded.
