Apple Settles Class Action Over Alleged AI Misrepresentations for $250 Million

Apple has agreed to a substantial class action settlement amounting to $250 million, stemming from allegations that the company misrepresented the artificial intelligence features in its newer iPhone models.
The lawsuit targeted the launch of the iPhone 16 in September 2024. Plaintiffs contended that the promotional efforts fostered a “clear and reasonable consumer expectation” of having advanced AI capabilities available on the new devices.

While Apple did implement some new AI features, the integration of ChatGPT with Siri and an emoji creation tool did not align with the consumer expectations set forth in the marketing, as alleged in the legal claims.
Eligibility Criteria for Compensation
To qualify for compensation, claimants must reside in the United States and have purchased an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any variation of the iPhone 16 within the purchase window of June 10, 2024, to March 29, 2025.
It is vital that they affirm their expectation of receiving certain Siri AI features at the time of purchase, which ultimately did not materialize.
Only the original purchasers are eligible; devices acquired through resale are not included, although businesses purchasing directly may submit claims.
As stipulated in the settlement, each valid claim would be valued at $25 per device, subject to potential adjustments based on total claims made, with a cap set at $95 per device. Claimants are permitted to file a separate claim for each qualifying device owned.
Instructions for Claim Submission
Qualified individuals must duly complete and submit a claim form by the deadline of December 21, 2026.
The submission must encompass current contact information, proof of purchase within the qualifying time frame, and supporting documentation to verify ownership of an eligible device.
Claims that lack completeness, contain erroneous information, or exceed the submission deadline will be denied. Approved claimants will receive payment via physical or electronic cheque upon final court approval of the settlement.
A hearing for final approval has been slated for February 24, 2027, at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California located in San Jose.
During this hearing, the court will deliberate on the fairness, reasonableness, and adequacy of the settlement, addressing any objections raised prior to the hearing date. Payments will be expedited, unless appeals are lodged, in which case disbursement could be delayed.
