Apple Introduces Innovative “Prepare to Ship” Feature for iPhone 18 Pro Max
In a significant update, Apple has unveiled a novel “Prepare to Ship” functionality tailored for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. This feature arises from the phone’s exceptionally large battery, which necessitates meticulous handling prior to shipping an activated device.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max boasts a remarkable battery capacity exceeding 20 watt-hours, as verified by Apple in a recent support document.
Devices housing a single-cell battery surpassing this threshold face stringent shipping protocols in numerous countries and regions, prompting Apple to integrate a comprehensive battery-management solution directly within the device.
Initially, the iPhone 18 Pro Max from the factory limits its operational battery capacity to below the 20Wh mark during transit. This limitation is lifted upon activation by the customer, thus granting access to the battery’s full potential.
These shipping regulations will again come into play if the device’s owner needs to send it for repairs, trade-ins, or returns. Consequently, Apple has embedded the Prepare to Ship option within Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
Upon activation, this feature autonomously discharges the iPhone 18 Pro Max to dip below the 20Wh threshold while imposing a charging cap to maintain that limit throughout the shipping process.
Apple advises that the device may experience elevated temperatures during this intentional discharge, which may last up to several hours if the battery is initially fully charged.
For repairs, trade-ins, or returns, the charging limit is set to a maximum of 80% for a duration of 14 days. Owners who are shipping the device directly to third parties—whether to sell it or as a gift—can also utilize the Prepare to Ship feature, with the option to revert the settings later.
Apple emphasizes that the battery of the iPhone 18 Pro Max remains safe under all circumstances. The Prepare to Ship feature serves to comply with shipping regulations and is not necessary when traveling with the phone, such as during flights.
This distinctive feature sheds light on the substantial battery size of Apple’s latest flagship device. The Apple Post previously reported that the iPhone 18 Pro Max can deliver up to 45 hours of video playback on eSIM-only models, marking the longest battery life claimed by Apple for its new Pro series.
According to Apple, the augmented battery works in tandem with the efficiency of the A20 Pro chip to optimize performance. Furthermore, eSIM-only variants utilize space typically allocated for physical SIM components to enhance battery capacity.
It is pertinent to note that the new Prepare to Ship feature is exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple’s official documentation states that this feature is not applicable to any other iPhone variant.
