Insider Brief

  • IBM is amplifying its research partnerships with IIT Bombay and IISc in domains such as agentic AI, sovereign AI, multimodal systems, AI infrastructure, and quantum computing.
  • The collaborative initiative with IIT Bombay will delve into Indic language models, multimodal AI, programming education, knowledge retrieval, and the frameworks underpinning AI infrastructure.
  • The engagement with IISc will encompass agentic systems, AI tailored for energy models, and cutting-edge quantum-HPC algorithms aimed at scientific and industrial applications.

IBM has unveiled the expansion of two pivotal research collaborations in India: one with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, and another with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

This initiative aims to accelerate innovation across the realms of agentic AI, sovereign AI, quantum computing, and next-generation computing systems.

Following a collaboration initiated in 2018, IBM researchers are set to further engage with the faculty and students from IIT Bombay.

The goal is to explore advancements in sovereign and Indic language model adaptation, as well as the sophistication of multimodal AI, AI infrastructure, and knowledge retrieval mechanisms.

In tandem, the collaboration with IISc, which commenced in 2021, will continue to develop agentic systems, AI applications, and quantum computing algorithms.

Strategic Focus Areas of the IBM-IIT Bombay Collaboration

  • Sovereign and Indic language model adaptation: This initiative seeks to enhance sovereign AI and Indic language models, thereby improving multilingual AI capabilities for Indian languages through innovative model adaptation and optimization methodologies.
  • Multimodal AI systems: The focus will also be on creating multimodal AI systems that bolster software programming education, foster human-AI collaboration, and propel intelligent operations within hybrid cloud environments.
  • AI Infrastructure and Knowledge Retrieval: The aim is to refine intelligent knowledge retrieval via AI systems to provide faster, precise, and scalable access to enterprise knowledge. Optimizing AI runtimes and distributed inference will be key to enhancing the performance, efficiency, and scalability of large language models.

Key Pillars of the IBM-IISc Research Collaboration

  • Agentic Systems: The initiative will foster agentic AI workflows that enhance orchestration in hybrid cloud environments, thereby enabling more efficient management of AI applications while balancing performance, costs, and operational complexities.
  • AI for Scientific and Industry Applications: This effort aims to develop lightweight time-series foundation models, grounded in the IBM Granite model family, for energy analytics to facilitate forecasting, anomaly detection, load disaggregation, and energy optimization—all while contributing benchmark datasets to expedite broader AI research.
  • Quantum Computing: Researchers will investigate orchestration for quantum and high-performance computing to expedite scientific discovery through more efficient quantum-centric supercomputing workflows and next-gen quantum-HPC algorithms.

These algorithms will utilize approximation-tolerant classical diagonalization to refine quantum subspace iteration techniques.

In comments regarding the collaborations, Dr. Amith Singhee, Director, IBM Research India and CTO, IBM India and South Asia, stated, The next wave of computing will be defined by breakthroughs in agentic AI, sovereign AI, and quantum computing.
