Google Enhances Fitbit Air with Blood Pressure and Insulin Resistance Tracking
Google is set to elevate the Fitbit Air experience by incorporating innovative features aimed at tracking blood pressure and insulin resistance trends.
These enhancements will be introduced later this month as part of the Health Guardian suite from Google Health, providing users with novel functionalities for monitoring their health evolution.
Users will have the opportunity to track fluctuations in their blood pressure and insulin resistance levels, receive monthly health analyses, and benefit from personalized health advice through the Google Health Coach.
However, it is important to note that these features will be exclusive to subscribers of Google Health Premium.
According to Google, the tracker will seamlessly monitor these vital metrics in the background, utilizing the accumulated data to produce monthly health reports.
This functionality aims to assist users in recognizing early indicators of concern related to blood pressure and insulin resistance, guiding them towards proactive lifestyle modifications before health issues escalate.
Functionality of Blood Pressure and Insulin Resistance Tracking
The newly introduced features fall under the auspices of Google’s Health Guardian suite, designed with the intent of helping users maintain vigilance over their health trajectory.
Rather than employing a traditional cuff-based method for blood pressure readings, Fitbit Air leverages its sensors to monitor changes in blood flow over extended periods.
By discerning these patterns, the device can suggest whether a user’s blood pressure trajectory remains within normal limits or displays troubling elevations.
On the other hand, the tracking of insulin resistance operates via a different mechanism. This feature scrutinizes health data gathered by the Fitbit Air over several weeks to identify fluctuations in the body’s insulin response.
Insulin plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels, and a compromised response to this hormone may lead to insulin resistance.
Instead of measuring insulin levels or blood sugar directly, the feature analyses bodily signals that could indicate potential issues.
Users can expect to receive these valuable insights through health reports delivered at the beginning of each month via the Google Health app, contingent on regular use of the Fitbit Air.
These reports encapsulate health changes over time and empower the Google Health Coach to provide tailored health recommendations and suggest modifications to fitness endeavors.
Nevertheless, it is essential for users to approach these features with discernment. While intended to enhance health awareness, they do not supplant medical diagnostics or consultations.
The insights do not yield real-time blood pressure readings, nor do they quantify blood sugar levels or diagnose conditions like hypertension or diabetes. Google strongly advises against altering medications solely based on these insights.
Expected Rollout of Features in India
Google has announced that the Health Guardian features will become accessible to Fitbit Air users in India later this month, necessitating a Google Health Premium subscription, the Google Health app, and a stable internet connection.
Currently, the Fitbit Air is available in India, retailing at INR 13,999.
In conjunction with these health tracking enhancements, Google is also advancing the automatic activity recognition capabilities on Fitbit Air, as well as on Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Watch 5.

This enhanced functionality will now recognize over 100 different activities, a significant increase from the previous 10, leveraging workout routines, historical data, and contextual reasoning to bolster accuracy.
According to Google, the refined system boasts nearly double the accuracy and significantly reduces the occurrence of missed workouts, ensuring workouts are logged automatically even if users neglect to initiate manual tracking.
