Overcoming Early Career Struggles: A Tech Professional’s Journey

A Bengaluru-based technology expert has recounted an inspiring trajectory marked by significant challenges, from grappling with programming at Samsung to excelling at Salesforce and ultimately securing a position at Google. This narrative encapsulates his quest to affirm that his successes were not mere happenstance.

The individual, Vedic Mishra, an alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), authored his experiences under the Instagram handle @bug_to_feature.

He recently articulated his professional odyssey, reflecting on how initial hurdles in coding imbued him with a sense of disconnection amidst a cohort of seasoned developers.

“In my nascent days at Samsung, coding was not my forte. Team dialogues concerning design and quality often felt incomprehensible,” he recollected, shedding light on the tribulations he encountered during the formative stages of his career.

Instead of succumbing to these obstacles, he resolved to confront them head-on. Drawing inspiration from his IIT journey, he nurtured a belief that having gained admission to such a prestigious institution, he could undoubtedly surmount his deficiencies in coding and technical prowess.

Mastering Salesforce: A Determined Pursuit

In 2024, Mishra dedicated two months to an intensive study regimen, investing 6 to 8 hours daily to bolster his competencies.

His preparation encompassed the exploration of data structures and algorithms (DSA), system design, and various technology stacks via online courses, literature, and articles on Medium.

This relentless effort culminated in his acquisition of a role at Salesforce. Nevertheless, attaining the position did little to assuage his lingering self-doubt regarding his rightful place among the elite in technology.

“The sensation of being an outsider persisted. Perhaps this is the predicament of achieving success too swiftly. What others labored over for 6 to 12 months, I accomplished in just two.

Even after successfully navigating multiple rigorous interview rounds at Salesforce and Amazon, it continued to feel like an anomaly,” he expressed.

Transitioning from Salesforce to Google

His choice to depart from Salesforce was not driven by dissatisfaction with the organization. Rather, he sought to further challenge himself and reinforce the notion that his triumph at Salesforce was a testament to his skills.

During his tenure at Salesforce, he meticulously dedicated numerous hours post-work to refine his design practices and tackle previously unattempted DSA problems.

“I led an exceptionally disciplined lifestyle in Bangalore, meticulously balancing my time between work, gym, and skill enhancement,” he stated.

Ultimately, Mishra determined that advancing to a larger technology firm represented the next chapter in his personal quest.

“I needed to validate to myself that my successes at Salesforce were not accidental, and regrettably, the only avenue to ascertain this was to transition to a more prestigious company,” he elaborated.

This juncture in his career ultimately paved the way for his inclusion in Google’s ranks. In retrospect, he emphasized that his professional maneuvers were not aimed at undermining his experiences at Samsung or Salesforce.

“I intend no discredit to my previous organizations, Samsung and Salesforce. My choices were purely motivated by personal ambition and the desire to demonstrate to myself that I earned my place at the table,” he told Hindustan Times.

Reactions from the Digital Community

Responses flood in from netizens, with one user noting, “This is truly an inspiration for many…” Another chimed in, “Well-deserved.”

Additional comments included, “Everything feels like a fluke when you achieve it,” and “Imposter syndrome creeps in swiftly, regardless of accomplishments. All you require is swiftness to outpace it. I resonate with your experience this year.”
