Anticipation surrounding Apple’s foldable device has been tempered as consumer demand shifts, attributed in part to a price disparity exceeding KRW 1 million, coupled with a delay in its launch.
Following the unveiling of the “iPhone Duo,” sales of Samsung Electronics’ “Galaxy Z Fold 8,” its primary competitor in South Korea, have experienced a marked increase.
This trend is interpreted as a migration of certain consumer expectations from the forthcoming iPhone offerings towards the Galaxy, spurred by comparisons of pricing, anticipated release dates, and detailed specifications.
Industry insights, dated the 17th, reveal that sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in South Korea surged by approximately 10% from the week prior to the iPhone Duo’s announcement.
Analysts suggest that prospective buyers who had postponed their purchases in anticipation of the iPhone Duo have pivoted towards the Galaxy Z Fold 8 after evaluating both models’ attributes and costs.
The timing of the iPhone Duo’s Korean launch may further influence consumer behavior. Analysts posit that the immediate demand for foldable devices has shifted towards the Galaxy Z Fold 8, as the iPhone Duo’s domestic debut is projected for late October to early November.
The discrepancy in retail pricing for the two devices is significant. In South Korea, the iPhone Duo’s factory price for the 256GB model is established at KRW 3.29 million, whereas the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which boasts equivalent storage, commands a price point exceeding KRW 2.27 million, marking an over KRW 1 million elevation. The 2TB variant of the iPhone Duo is priced at KRW 5.09 million.
In the United States, the price differential between the two devices’ 256GB models remains less pronounced, approximating a mere $100.
Differences in physicality further distinguish the products; the iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams and reaches a thickness of 11.3 millimeters when folded. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 53 grams lighter and 0.7 millimeters slimmer.
Moreover, the utilization of their expansive displays varies significantly. The iPhone Duo accommodates a dual-screen multitasking approach, effectively splitting the screen, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 facilitates the use of up to three applications concurrently.
As Apple makes its inaugural foray into the foldable smartphone arena, an intensified competition with Samsung Electronics, the long-standing market leader, is anticipated.

Once the iPhone Duo is officially launched in South Korea, consumers are poised to engage in a comparative evaluation of the two models, scrutinizing aspects such as pricing, portability, and the capability of leveraging their extensive screens.
