Cyber Security TAFE Centre of Excellence Unveiled in Canberra
The Canberra Institute of Technology’s Woden campus has proudly inaugurated a new centre of excellence dedicated to cyber security.
On September 15, the Albanese government launched its 13th TAFE Centre of Excellence within the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT), aimed at fortifying Australia’s defenses against national cyber threats and enhancing the nation’s cyber security workforce.
“The significance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated; it is essential for safeguarding Australians and ensuring the stability of our economy. Cultivating a workforce equipped with advanced cybersecurity skills is indispensable for positioning Australia at the vanguard of sectoral advancements,” stated Andrew Giles, Minister for Skills and Training.
“The initiation of the Cyber Security TAFE Centre of Excellence serves a pivotal role in this endeavor, as the Albanese Labor government reinvigorates TAFE as the cornerstone of our vocational education and training framework,” he continued.
“We are committing resources to free TAFE initiatives so Australians can acquire the competencies requisite for emerging job markets. Moreover, through specialised TAFE centres such as the one in Woden, students will gain access to pertinent, hands-on training that aligns with their future employment aspirations.”
Michael Pettersson, the ACT Minister for Skills, Training and Industrial Relations, emphasised that Canberra is ideally suited for hosting this centre of excellence.

“As the capital city, we boast formidable sovereign cybersecurity capabilities, numerous businesses, and well-established research and educational institutions. The Cyber Centre of Excellence will be bolstered by the Canberra Cyber Hub, renowned for its adeptness in connecting learners with potential employers,” Pettersson remarked.
“CIT has cultivated a commendable history of training cybersecurity professionals and collaborating with both government and industry. Establishing the centre at CIT will facilitate the development of a robust talent pipeline to address workforce gaps and augment the involvement of underrepresented demographics, including women, in this crucial domain.”
The Cyber Security TAFE Centre of Excellence will also provide programs for senior secondary students and trades students aspiring to establish their own small enterprises, while simultaneously serving as a nexus for TAFEs nationwide.
