Apple to Implement Price Increases Amid Rising Costs

The company intends to adjust its product pricing as a direct response to surging costs associated with memory and storage chips, a move that could significantly influence the forthcoming iPhone 18.

While no explicit information regarding the timeline, specific products, or extent of the price hike has been disclosed, it is anticipated that the iPhone 18 series—debuting in September—will be subjected to these adjustments. Additionally, the prices of the iPad and Mac lines may also witness increases in the short term.
“Unfortunately, price increases are inevitable. We endeavor to mitigate the ramifications of the increases that confront us, while simultaneously striving to shield our customers from these escalating costs. Yet, the present circumstances have rendered the situation unsustainable,” Cook articulated.
Last month, Apple raised the price of the Mac mini, with the model boasting 512GB of storage now starting at RM3,349. The previous 256GB variant has been discontinued.
This uptick in pricing is attributable to the burgeoning demand for memory and storage solutions spurred by the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, which has resulted in diminishing supplies.
No Plans for In-House Chip Manufacturing
Simultaneously, Apple finds itself in need of enhanced DRAM capacity to accommodate new AI functionalities. Cook acknowledged that the escalating costs of memory chips represent a significant hurdle for the company.
He mentioned that Apple is prepared to utilize its cash reserves to bolster memory supply; however, specifics regarding forthcoming actions remain undisclosed.
Moreover, Apple has no intentions to construct its own manufacturers for memory or storage chips, choosing instead to rely on existing supplier partnerships to fulfill its component requirements.
Cook characterized the current climate as extraordinary, citing over four decades in the electronics supply chain, spanning organizations such as IBM, Compaq, and Apple, without encountering price volatility of this magnitude in the last six months.
Other tech giants, including Samsung, Microsoft, Sony, and Dell, have similarly raised their product prices in light of increased component costs.
Consider Waiting for Older Models
While it is commonplace for Apple to adjust its pricing with new product releases, this instance may involve adjustments exceeding the typical RM200 increase.
