Apple has been compelled to address the surge of AI agent applications, such as Meta’s Muse, which are accessing sensitive data from Mac users.

In response, Apple plans to implement enhanced controls for “Full Disk Access,” explicitly querying Mac users about granting third-party apps permission to access specific areas of their system.

While Full Disk Access enables AI agents to perform a broader array of functions, many users may remain unaware of the cybersecurity implications surrounding such AI entities.

The impetus behind this decision is the proliferation of AI agents like Muse, which has gained over 5 million downloads, along with the potential hazards tied to granting unrestricted access to a user’s confidential information.

Upon downloading third-party applications, users often encounter requests for access to particular functionalities. Apple mandates that these applications solicit user permission to utilize such features.

For instance, a third-party webcam application must seek user approval to access the Mac’s camera and audio capabilities. Permission must be explicitly granted before an application can leverage these functionalities.

Certain applications, such as those intended for data backup, necessitate comprehensive system access. To facilitate various functionalities—from email communication to access to file directories—Apple permits applications to request “Full Disk Access.”

Nonetheless, AI agents that operate independently introduce novel risks that other applications do not present when granted such access.

For example, Inc. columnist Jason Aten recently found that Meta’s Muse AI assistant had inexplicably synchronized his entire local Messages database, utilizing those messages for its contextual operations.

Aten asserts he did not authorize Muse to access his Messages. Conversely, Meta contends that if Aten declined to provide these permissions, such access would be unattainable. Consequently, Apple seeks to clarify the process through which users grant these permissions.

Apple’s comprehensive update is detailed below:

“We furnish developers with robust APIs to incorporate impressive functionalities into their applications for Apple products, underpinned by a framework of controls designed to safeguard users’ private information.

Full Disk Access largely bypasses these safeguards, enabling backup applications to operate effectively on the Mac.

Some developers, however, are utilizing Full Disk Access in ways that may jeopardize users, exposing extensive personal data—including files, emails, messages, and even browsing history—without users’ complete awareness and comprehension.

This is especially concerning for communication applications, which may compromise the privacy of individuals users are in contact with.

Moving forward, we will establish supplementary controls to guarantee that users who genuinely wish to permit an application this extraordinary level of access can only do so following very explicit user actions.

Addressing this issue is of paramount importance. As AI agents become progressively capable and independent, the risks associated with this level of access will escalate significantly.

We are committed to ensuring users fully comprehend these risks prior to granting such access, allowing them to make informed choices regarding their own data and privacy.
