Apple Intensifies Focus on Siri
The tech behemoth Apple is poised to significantly enhance its digital assistant, Siri, by integrating it with Google Gemini’s advanced capabilities.
This ambitious endeavor is expected to be unveiled later this year. In anticipation of this pivotal launch, Apple is reportedly dispatching a cohort of nearly 200 engineers, dedicated to Siri’s development, to an intensive AI coding bootcamp.
The initiative may be an effort to refine their proficiency with contemporary AI tools, particularly in an era where platforms like Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex are surging in relevance.
According to a report by The Information, this specialized training aims to address the Siri team’s perceived shortcomings within the Apple framework. The report highlights that the Siri development team has often been regarded as a “laggard” by their peers at Apple.
Nevertheless, a substantial contingent remains committed to Siri’s evolution. Approximately 60 engineers will focus on ongoing development, while another 60 are tasked with evaluating Siri’s operational efficacy.
Their responsibilities encompass ensuring compliance with Apple’s rigorous safety standards and enhancing the system’s ability to comprehend and process user requests.

In a landscape where technology giants like Google, Microsoft, and Meta are wholeheartedly embracing AI advancements, Apple appears to be following suit.
Reports suggest that numerous teams within Cupertino have earmarked considerable budget portions for tools like Claude Code, championing a push towards AI-assisted coding practices. However, the Siri team has been characterized as not fully harnessing the potential of these innovative coding utilities.
The coding bootcamp initiative may serve as a strategic maneuver to galvanize the “laggard” Siri team, compelling them to integrate AI more thoroughly before the anticipated comprehensive update.
Apple’s AI strategy has experienced notable recalibrations, prompted by the Siri team’s failure to deliver the much-anticipated Apple Intelligence iteration for iOS 18.
This setback catalyzed a substantial organizational realignment, coinciding with the imminent retirement of former AI chief John Giannandrea.
Presently, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, has assumed oversight of AI development, while Mike Rockwell, distinguished for his contributions to the Vision Pro, now spearheads the Siri initiative.
Anticipating the New Siri
The forthcoming iteration of Siri is expected to be showcased at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), slated for June. Apple has entered into a strategic partnership with Google to leverage the Gemini AI models in refining Siri’s capabilities.
Anticipation is high for a first look at the Gemini-enhanced Siri during WWDC, with expectations that the revamped virtual assistant will introduce augmented features, including the capacity to autonomously resolve intricate queries, thereby reducing reliance on external algorithms like ChatGPT.
It is important to note that the upgraded Siri may initially be available only on iPhones, coinciding with the release of iOS 27. The debut of iOS 27 is projected for September, alongside the anticipated launch of the iPhone 18 Pro models and the iPhone Fold.
