Potential Overhaul for iPad Air Anticipated in 2027
Washington, [US] – August 1 (ANI): Apple is poised for a significant transformation of its iPad Air, with predictions indicating a redesigned model set to debut in early 2027, coinciding with a much-anticipated transition to OLED display technology.
According to Mac Rumors, the iPad Air has maintained an unchanged external design since its last update in 2020, marking it as the longest-serving design in Apple’s current tablet range.
The device’s fourth-generation iteration introduced flat edges, a borderless display, and integrated Touch ID within the top button. Subsequent updates have focused solely on enhancing internal hardware, upgrading to M1, M2, M3, and M4 chips, while leaving the device’s aesthetics unaltered.
This paradigm may shift in 2027, as Apple is expected to incorporate an OLED display into the iPad Air, with Samsung Display rumored to provide single-stack LTPS OLED panels.
These panels are anticipated to perform below the tandem OLED technology employed in the iPad Pro in terms of pricing and luminosity.
Further murmurs suggest that the iPad Air may also debut with Apple’s forthcoming M5 chip.
The transition to OLED technology signifies the most consequential enhancement for the iPad Air in numerous years, aligning with Apple’s broader strategy to proliferate OLED technology across a wider array of products, encompassing the iMac and MacBook Air.
A redesign would echo Apple’s recent trend following major display enhancements. When the iPad Pro integrated OLED technology in 2024, it also unveiled its first comprehensive redesign since 2018, showcasing a notably slimmer profile.
Furthermore, the directions taken by Apple’s upcoming iPad mini 8 could illuminate the trajectory for the company’s tablet designs.
Anticipated for release in October, reports indicate that the iPad mini 8 is to feature a redesigned chassis, an OLED display, an innovative vibration-based speaker system omitting traditional speaker holes, and a water-resistant casing—marking firsts within the iPad range.
Historically, the iPad Air and iPad mini have shared similar design aesthetics. The iPad mini adopted the iPad Air’s design in 2021, preserving that silhouette through to the iPad mini 7.
Should the iPad mini receive a refreshed enclosure this year, it is plausible that the iPad Air will embark on a similar redesign, reminiscent of how the original iPad mini influenced the inaugural iPad Air.

However, there remain no definitive rumors substantiating an iPad Air redesign for 2027. Should Apple adhere to the anticipated design trajectory of the forthcoming iPad mini, it’s conceivable that the iPad Air could also embrace features such as a vibration-based speaker system and enhanced water resistance, alongside the expected OLED display.
