Washington [US], August 1 (ANI): The iPad Air from Apple is reportedly poised for its most significant revamp in several years, with hints pointing toward an innovative redesign slated for early 2027. This anticipated refresh includes a long-awaited transition to OLED display technology.
According to Mac Rumours, the iPad Air has maintained its external architecture since 2020, thereby earning the distinction of being the longest-tenured design in Apple’s tablet portfolio.
The last substantial modification occurred with the fourth-generation iPad Air, which introduced flat edges, an expansive all-screen interface, and integrated Touch ID within the top button.
Subsequent updates have concentrated on internal enhancements, such as the incorporation of M1, M2, M3, and M4 chips, while leaving the external aesthetic unchanged.
Anticipations are, however, that 2027 will herald a shift, with Apple set to debut an OLED display for the iPad Air.
Reports indicate that Samsung Display will supply single-stack LTPS OLED panels, which, while not as cost-prohibitive or luminous as the tandem OLED technology found in the iPad Pro, still represent a noteworthy upgrade.
Additionally, the new model is speculated to house Apple’s upcoming M5 chip. This OLED transition would symbolize the most substantial evolution for the iPad Air in years, aligning with Apple’s broader initiative to proliferate OLED technology across its product range, including the iMac and MacBook Air.
A redesign could also follow Apple’s recent trend with significant display innovations. When OLED technology was adopted by the iPad Pro in 2024, it coincided with the first complete redesign since 2018, featuring a notably slimmer chassis.
The forthcoming iPad mini 8 may offer further insights into the future direction of Apple’s tablet designs.
Mac Rumours suggests that this model, expected to launch in October, will unveil a redesigned chassis, an OLED display, a novel vibration-based speaker system that eliminates conventional speaker grilles, and a waterproof casing— all set to make debut appearances within the iPad lineup.
The iPad Air and iPad mini have shared a common design ethos for years; indeed, the iPad mini adopted the aesthetics of the iPad Air back in 2021, continuing this stylization into the iPad mini 7.
Should the iPad mini secure a new enclosure this year, a similar evolution could follow for the iPad Air—echoing how the original iPad mini influenced the inception of the first iPad Air.

At present, specific rumors regarding an iPad Air redesign in 2027 remain scarce. However, if Apple adheres to the anticipated design trajectory of the next-generation iPad mini, it is plausible that the iPad Air will also incorporate features such as a vibration-based speaker system and water resistance, in tandem with its expected OLED display.
