Apple Enhances Smart Home Portfolio with New Home Collection

Apple has unveiled an expansion to its intelligent home ecosystem through the introduction of the Apple Home Collection, a curated array of interconnected accessories developed in partnership with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric.

This extensive assembly encompasses essential systems for home security, entry access, and climate regulation, featuring an array of devices including cameras, a video doorbell, a smart lock, thermostats, and various sensors.

What distinguishes this collection is its seamless control system. Users can effortlessly integrate compatible accessories via their iPhones and manage them through the Apple Home app, obviating the need for additional manufacturer applications or extraneous account setups.

According to Apple, this system ensures robust end-to-end encryption, thereby safeguarding users’ home data.

The products are crafted to function autonomously or in conjunction with compatible devices such as Apple HomeView, HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV 4K.

Home Security and Cameras

LG’s camera lineup consists of four offerings: a wired video doorbell, a floodlight camera, an outdoor camera, and an indoor camera.

Included in LG’s repertoire, the outdoor and indoor cameras, along with the floodlight camera and video doorbell, can capture footage at resolutions up to 2.5K.

Certain models boast advanced personalization capabilities, recognizing individuals, pets, vehicles, and packages.

Subscribers to iCloud+ can access an event-video history extending up to ten days, which is searchable through natural language processing provided by Apple Intelligence.

The Indoor Cam adopts a unique approach to privacy management. It can reposition its lens when users check in remotely, and retracts from its monitoring position upon the return of the first household member. Users also have the ability to manually adjust its orientation through the Home app.

Smart Deadbolt Lock

The Smart Deadbolt Lock from LG employs Ultra Wideband technology, facilitating the identification of authorized users approaching with a compatible home key. Additionally, it offers access via a PIN code and allows guest entry through compatible Apple devices.

Households can conveniently share guest access through the Home app, enabling visitors or service providers to gain entry without necessitating the owner’s primary credentials.

Moreover, the lock and video doorbell are designed to operate in tandem. Users can receive notifications upon doorbell activation, view visitors, engage in two-way communication, and unlock the door via supported Apple devices.

The lock is compatible with Matter and Aliro, ensuring that critical access functions remain operational even in the absence of an internet connection.

Smart Thermostats by LG and Schneider Electric

The smart thermostats developed by LG and Schneider Electric are engineered to adjust temperature settings according to household schedules and usage patterns.

Certain sensors have the capability to monitor multiple rooms, and the integration of Matter and Thread enhances accessory connectivity throughout the smart home ecosystem.

Privacy and Security Measures

Apple asserts that the privacy of camera recordings and personal data processed through Apple Home is fortified through end-to-end encryption, meaning that neither Apple, LG Electronics, nor Schneider Electric can access this sensitive data.

Compatibility with local processing capabilities allows footage to be managed via a home hub or through Private Cloud Compute, and available iCloud+ plans provide encrypted storage solutions.

These accessories are also compatible with Thread, a protocol designed to streamline communication among connected devices in smart homes.

According to Apple, the network credentials can be updated automatically whenever users change their home Wi-Fi settings.

Users can establish automation routines that integrate multiple products. For example, a command could harmonize temperature adjustments, reposition an indoor camera, and initiate music playback all at once.

Alternatively, another routine could lock doors and activate cameras when the last household member departs.

For those who prefer professional assistance, Apple Retail offers third-party installation services throughout the United States for a fee.

Pricing and Availability

The Apple Home Collection is anticipated to debut in December, with select accessories projected to launch in early 2027. The pricing for the LG Floodlight Cam ranges from $199.95 to $399.95, contingent upon the model chosen.

The LG Smart Deadbolt Lock is priced starting at $349.95, and compatible thermostats begin at $199.95.

This collection will be available in various markets. Apple notes that its Siri AI will function in English in India and several other locations, with HomePod mini 2 scheduled for an update to access this feature soon.

However, HomeView has yet to be released in the European Union, as Siri AI has not been deployed for iOS in that region.
