Apple Intelligence Poised for Launch on iPhones in China
Apple’s foray into artificial intelligence may soon extend to supported iPhones in China, marking a significant leap nearly two years after such features debuted in the United States.
Reports indicate that Chinese regulatory bodies have sanctioned the deployment of Alibaba’s AI models across various Apple devices, thereby surmounting a pivotal obstacle in the rollout process.
This development arrives just in time for the anticipated launch of Apple’s inaugural foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, in the Chinese market.
According to the South China Morning Post, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has updated the network access permissions for the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and several preceding iPhone models to incorporate Alibaba’s AI frameworks.
Among these are Tongyi Qianwen, commonly referred to as Qwen, and Tongyi Wanxiang, which facilitates the creation of AI-generated imagery and videos.
Integration of Alibaba’s AI in Apple Products
While Apple has successfully navigated regulatory channels for Apple Intelligence in mainland China, the firm has yet to roll out the service. This latest regulatory endorsement brings Apple a step closer to enabling its AI features for users in China.
In contrast to international territories, where the tech giant partners with entities like OpenAI and Google to enhance its AI capabilities, Apple is pivoting toward domestic technology firms within China.
This strategic shift is largely attributable to the nation’s stringent regulations governing AI services, data security, and algorithm deployment.
Alibaba’s Qwen models are anticipated to bolster various functionalities within Apple Intelligence, such as text generation and image creation.
The integration is likely to permeate compatible devices, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Vision Pro gadgets sold in China.
Significance of Apple Intelligence for the Brand
Apple Intelligence transcends the realm of mere software updates for the company. Features like writing aids, email summaries, and photo editing have emerged as critical components of Apple’s marketing narrative for its latest devices.
In the absence of these functionalities, Apple could find itself eclipsed by regional competitors that are increasingly highlighting AI capabilities in their smartphones.
This competitive landscape is rapidly intensifying. Chinese manufacturers, particularly Huawei, are making aggressive strides in the high-end smartphone segment, further compelling Apple to enhance its presence in the market.

Moreover, the timing is of great consequence concerning the impending iPhone Duo launch. Although the new approval does not guarantee an immediate release of Apple Intelligence, it does offer a clearer signpost that Apple is diligently working toward introducing its AI features to the Chinese mainland.
