Amazon MGM Studios Advances New Robocop TV Series
As initially reported by SFFGazette.com, Amazon MGM Studios is making strides in the production of a fresh Robocop television series (not a typographical error; the cinematic franchise utilized an uppercase ‘C’ in RoboCop, whereas this adaptation opts for Robocop).
This eight-episode series is being developed for Prime Video under the aegis of showrunner Peter Ocko (Lodge 49), with Blumhouse Atomic Monster at the helm.
Executive producers James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett are set to guide the series. Announced three years prior, ample time has been devoted to ensuring that Amazon adeptly revamps this iconic narrative.
Since its inaugural release in 1987, Robocop has firmly established itself as a cultural touchstone within the science fiction genre.
What originally emerged as a daring social commentary—intertwining visceral action with critiques of corporate avarice, privatization, and the essence of human identity—has persisted through the ages, spawning a multitude of sequels, television adaptations, video games, and comic publications.
The official logline encapsulates the core themes: “Its themes of humanity versus technology and the consequences of unchecked corporate power feel more relevant today than ever, making it the ideal property to reimagine for a new era of television.”
Regrettably, the specifics of the plot remain elusive. Currently, there is no clarification on whether the series will offer a reinterpretation of Alex Murphy’s journey, an independent tale set within the same universe, or a comprehensive rethinking of the original narrative.
In the 1987 film, Murphy, a police officer, meets a tragic end at the hands of criminals and is subsequently resurrected by the megacorporation Omni Consumer Products as the cyborg law enforcer known as “RoboCop.”
Unaware of his previous existence, RoboCop embarks on a campaign against crime while grappling with the vestiges of his humanity.
Ed Neumeier, co-creator and co-writer of the original film, also serves as an executive producer for this adaptation.
Wan shared his enthusiasm today, stating, I’ve been a massive fan of RoboCop forever, so getting to help bring this world to television is a dream.
What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time, and its questions about technology, identity, and who corporations really serve have only grown more urgent.
“With Peter’s distinctive vision and bold approach to storytelling, and alongside Ed and our partners at Amazon MGM Studios, we’re working to honour what made the original iconic and highlight its relevancy in this modern, tech-driven world, while building something unmistakably new for a global audience,” added the filmmaker.
Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, remarked, “Robocop is a franchise that has meant something to audiences for nearly four decades—not just as an action spectacle, but as a sharp, provocative mirror of our relationship with technology and power.”

He continued, Peter Ocko has crafted a vision that honours the soul of what made the original so enduring while building something entirely fresh and urgent for today.
Paired with the cinematic sensibility of James Wan and the team at Blumhouse Atomic Monster, we believe this series will captivate a whole new generation of fans on Prime Video.
The RoboCop franchise has birthed two sequels, an animated series, and several live-action iterations on television.
A reboot attempted in 2014, featuring Joel Kinnaman, achieved moderate commercial success, grossing $242.6 million against a reported budget of $130 million, yet garnered mixed reviews (50% on Rotten Tomatoes).
The franchise remained dormant until the release of the acclaimed 2023 video game, RoboCop: Rogue City, which exists within the same universe as the films starring Peter Weller.
