Runway Launches $10 Million Venture Fund to Propel Early-Stage Startups
Runway, an innovative startup specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) video generation, has announced the establishment of a $10 million venture fund aimed at nurturing nascent enterprises. This development was reported by TechCrunch on Tuesday.
Operating from New York, Runway’s Builders Programme seeks to foster startups in their evolutionary stages, from seed through to Series C.
The focus will lie primarily in sectors such as AI, media, and world simulation—technologies that digitally replicate and model aspects of the real world using advanced AI algorithms.
Startups selected for participation will benefit from complimentary API credits, granting them economical access to Runway’s proprietary AI models for development purposes, as outlined in the report.
This initiative is a part of Runway’s larger strategic vision to cultivate a comprehensive ecosystem centered around what they term “video intelligence.” This concept encapsulates AI systems proficient in generating, editing, and comprehending video content at scale.
Runway’s cofounder and Chief Innovation Officer, Alejandro Matamala-Ortiz, conveyed that the underlying objective is to facilitate the discovery of emerging applications across various industries that may extend beyond Runway’s current operational capacity.
Fund Structure
The venture fund is meticulously organized into three distinct pathways: technical teams, builders, and companies. Technical teams focus on the construction of foundational AI infrastructure and the advancement of pioneering technologies.
Meanwhile, builders are startups that craft applications leveraging these foundational models, thereby translating core AI functionalities into user-friendly products. Lastly, the category of companies includes entities engaged in experimental content creation, storytelling, and distribution.
Noteworthy startups included in the fund’s inaugural cohort are Cartesia, the creative studio MSCHF, the mental healthcare innovator Oasys Health, fintech startup Spara, educational technology enterprise Subject, and the AI-powered sales demonstration agent Supersonik.
Previous Investments by Runway
Runway has an established record of supporting early-stage ventures, having previously invested in startups like LanceDB—focused on developing AI-optimized databases—and Tamarind Bio, which employs AI to enhance pharmaceutical research and drug development.
Founded in 2018, Runway has solidified its position as a significant influencer in the realm of generative AI (GenAI), especially in video synthesis and editing tools utilized by creators, studios, and corporations alike.

Valued at approximately $5.3 billion, the company has successfully raised nearly $860 million to date, attracting investments from prominent stakeholders, including Nvidia and the Qatar Investment Authority, recognized as one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds.
