AI-Powered Legal Research Tool Launched in Singapore
SINGAPORE – A pioneering artificial intelligence (AI)-driven search engine is poised to revolutionize legal research, liberating over three-quarters of attorneys in Singapore who utilize the LawNet platform from time-consuming tasks.
Created in partnership with the Singapore Academy of Law, this innovative instrument enables legal practitioners to pose inquiries in natural language and obtain contextually appropriate, pertinent answers.
The tool is meticulously trained on Singapore’s unique legal landscape, amalgamating a wealth of data that includes judgments, Singapore Law Reports, statutes, and academic texts.
Introduced on LawNet and inaugurated by Justice Kwek Mean Luck during the TechLaw.Fest on September 11 at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, the GPT-Legal Q&A tool promises to transform legal research.
The prior GPT-Legal model, launched in 2024, facilitated the creation of summaries for over 15,000 unreported court judgments, marking a significant milestone in legal documentation.
Justice Kwek remarked, “This is a transformative feature. The new capability allows attorneys to engage in natural language queries about legal research, garnering AI-generated responses that are grounded in LawNet’s extensive repository.”
He elaborated, “This system is designed to augment traditional keyword searches by fostering a more intuitive and responsive research experience.”
Initially, the feature will concentrate on contract law, an essential domain that forms the foundation of various specialized legal fields.
“This project is a considerable endeavor, encompassing comprehensive development and meticulous testing to align technological advancements with the demands of legal practice. Consequently, we will deploy this functionality in stages,” noted Justice Kwek.
The model will subsequently evolve to encompass significant legal areas, including family law and criminal law.
Moreover, the Infocomm Media Development Authority has developed a pioneering agentic AI demonstrator for the Singapore Academy of Law aimed at assisting corporate secretaries in organizing annual general meetings (AGMs).
This agentic AI system operates independently, facilitating tasks such as coordinating schedules among directors to identify suitable time slots for AGMs.
By autonomously managing routine corporate secretarial responsibilities, the AI agent enables professionals to redirect their focus toward more impactful advisory and strategic roles.
