Tech Job Market Faces Severe Strain Amid AI Focus

The technology job market continues to endure significant turbulence. Corporations are increasingly investing in artificial intelligence, thereby reorganizing their teams, altering operational methodologies, and seeking avenues for cost reduction.

Unfortunately, amidst these transformations, human employment is bearing the brunt of such measures.

As reported by Layoffs. fyi, a staggering 129,488 tech workers have experienced layoffs across 296 tech firms in the year 2026. Recently, industry giants like Apple, Uber, Oracle, and PayPal have initiated substantial workforce reductions.

This begs the question: what factors underlie these recent job cuts, and which companies find themselves most affected? Let us delve into the recent major layoffs and workforce adjustments reported over the past weeks.

Apple’s Workforce Reduction

In the previous month, Apple purportedly terminated over 200 employees across various teams engaged in Siri, Vision Pro, and associated software, as noted by Bloomberg.

Approximately 100 positions were eliminated from the Vision Pro division, with a similar number affected in the Siri and software teams, including the Intelligent Systems Experience group, which is integral to the development of AI functionalities across Apple devices.

While Apple acknowledged the restructuring, it refrained from specifying the precise layoff figures. The company articulated that it is realigning its teams to adapt its business strategy, concurrently creating new opportunities.

The effects of these changes vary among Apple’s divisions. In Vision Pro, the gaming team has largely disbanded, and immersive video operations have been curtailed.

Conversely, Siri is undergoing a total transformation, as Apple reconfigures the voice assistant around a new AI framework necessitating distinct expertise.

Uber’s Major Layoff Initiative

Uber has also declared an extensive round of layoffs in the first week of September. The ride-hailing titan intends to eliminate roughly 3,300 positions globally, equating to approximately 10 percent of its workforce, marking its most substantial job reductions since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an internal memo to staff, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi articulated the company’s plans to streamline management layers, simplify teams, and rethink its global operational strategy.

Uber aims to redirect some of the financial savings to invest in emerging technologies, notably AI and autonomous vehicles.

Job Cuts at PayPal in India

PayPal has also undertaken job cuts in India as part of a broader global restructuring initiative. Initial reports suggested that approximately 600 employees may have been impacted; however, PayPal later clarified to India Today Tech that 220 employees, representing around 4 percent of its teams in India, were affected as of August 31.

The corporation indicated that these modifications are part of a previously disclosed multi-year transformation plan designed to streamline global operations and bolster enduring growth.

Oracle’s Possible Workforce Reductions

New developments indicate that Oracle may be on the brink of another round of layoffs. Business Insider has reported that the company could potentially reduce its workforce further, with internal predictions estimating that between 7,000 and 10,000 jobs globally may be at risk.

The repercussions for its India operations, however, remain unverified. Employees have reportedly been advised to anticipate potential announcements around early to mid-September, although Oracle has yet to officially confirm another phase of layoffs.

These prospective cuts follow a significant downsizing previously executed by Oracle, which witnessed a reduction of approximately 21,000 employees over the twelve months concluding in May 2026, thereby bringing its workforce down to around 141,000.

Concurrently, Oracle has been making substantial investments in AI and cloud infrastructure, emphasizing the need for efficient cost control and workforce restructuring.
