NYK Strengthens Cybersecurity Amid Digital Transformation
A prominent Japanese shipping conglomerate is fortifying its defenses against cyber threats while advancing its digital transformation strategy.
NYK is channeling investments into sophisticated cybersecurity technologies alongside enhanced digitalization and the expanded deployment of artificial intelligence (AI).
This pivotal shipping group finds itself at a crucial juncture in its digital evolution, having recently transitioned its core IT systems, with ambitions to automate additional processes.
During his annual New Year’s address, President Takaya Soga stressed the imperative of cultivating robust cyber defenses as the company embarks on these transformative initiatives.
The shift towards digital initiatives and technologies renders both onshore and shipboard IT systems increasingly susceptible to cyber threats, a concern acknowledged by Mr. Soga.
“Cybersecurity necessitates vigilance, not merely at the organizational level but also on an individual basis, including aboard our vessels,” he remarked.
“As evidenced by recent incidents within the industry, any breach can entail significant resources for damage control and poses a substantial risk to our trustworthiness and operational distribution.”
It remains unclear if Mr. Soga was referencing specific breaches at NYK or discussing general industry vulnerabilities; however, he emphasized his commitment to preventing any cybersecurity compromise at NYK.
“While we enhance our defenses and standardize security protocols throughout the organization, any minor errors can expose vulnerabilities,” he cautioned. “You are likely aware of the random training emails sent out periodically. Exercise utmost caution when using either company-issued or personal devices.”
Project Nikuman and AI Integration
In his address, Mr. Soga delineated the advancements of the Nikuman internal initiative designed to overhaul workflows and establish a novel operational framework.
“We have successfully completed the migration of our core systems, entering a critical phase—implementing actionable measures across the group to realize substantial process efficiencies and automated outputs for management,” he stated.
An essential component of this digital agenda is the integration of AI throughout the organization to bolster efficacy and enhance employee expertise.
“Regarding AI, beyond extensive system applications, I encourage everyone to adhere to the principle I frequently discuss: let machines perform the tasks they excel at,” he articulated to NYK personnel.
“Utilize AI at the individual level to refine processes and spearhead grassroots initiatives. We intend to launch a dedicated campaign this year to support these endeavours.”
Moreover, Mr. Soga anticipates continued investment in the fleet throughout 2026, which includes adopting technologies aimed at reducing emissions and expanding operational capacity.
“Over the past three years, we have fortified our business foundations through strategic mergers and acquisitions, alongside investments in vessels for stable future returns,” he affirmed.
NYK has also pioneered decarbonization technologies and fostered new business ventures through collaborative efforts across Japan, enhancing capital efficiency while implementing systems and wage reforms to ensure employees can work with pride and vitality.
