Indian Envoy and US Congressman Discuss Shared Priorities in Defence and AI

Washington, December 14—India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, held an informative dialogue with Representative Ted Lieu, Vice Chair of the House Democrats Caucus.

Their conversation revolved around mutual priorities encompassing emerging trends in Artificial Intelligence (AI), defence and security collaboration, trade and investment, as well as cultural exchanges.

“It was an engaging conversation with Representative Ted Lieu. We explored our aligned priorities concerning advancements in AI, defence partnerships, trade relations, and the strengthening of people-to-people ties.

I anticipate further collaboration on issues of shared interest,” Kwatra articulated on X following their meeting.

On December 12, Kwatra conveyed his appreciation for his meeting with Representative Yvette D. Clarke, the Chair of the Black Caucus.

He highlighted her unwavering support for robust India-US relations and acknowledged her insights on enhancing bilateral collaboration within the AI domain, particularly regarding data privacy and security.

Furthermore, he remarked on a fruitful discussion with industry representatives at a roundtable organised by the Albright Stonebridge Group, focusing on India’s AI aspirations.

He extended an invitation to US industries, encouraging them to become integral partners in India’s AI trajectory.

Earlier this week, the Ambassador also engaged with Senator Brian Schatz, Deputy Secretary of the Senate Democratic Conference and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“It was a pleasure to meet Senator Brian Schatz. We shared views on ongoing bilateral defence cooperation and on deepening India-US engagement in energy, technology, and innovation,” Kwatra noted on X.

In addition, Kwatra met Representative Dina Titus, where they discussed various aspects of partnership, including technology, tourism, and trade.

Following their dialogue, he expressed gratitude for her steadfast commitment to fostering stronger ties between the two nations.

On December 9, India and the US conducted Foreign Office Consultations wherein they deliberated on pivotal bilateral issues, encompassing trade, investment, defence cooperation, the TRUST initiative, energy collaboration—specifically civil nuclear cooperation—technology, critical minerals, and trusted supply chains, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The MEA further announced, “We both welcomed the continuous progress across existing dialogue mechanisms and agreed to accelerate the implementation of the ‘Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology (COMPACT) for the 21st Century’ initiative, aiming to facilitate transformative cooperation across key pillars of our partnership.”
