New Delhi, October 28: The e-commerce titan Amazon is poised to initiate layoffs affecting approximately 30,000 corporate personnel starting on Tuesday.
This decision, driven by a need to curtail expenditures and rectify overstaffing incurred during the heightened demand amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, was revealed amidst ongoing reports. The company has not issued a formal statement regarding these changes.
Reports from Reuters indicate that the impacted employees will likely receive notifications via email commencing Tuesday morning (US time). Amazon’s global workforce exceeds 1.54 million, inclusive of warehouse operatives.
Since 2022, the company has enacted reductions exceeding 27,000 positions through various smaller layoffs, with its cloud services, devices, communications, and retail branches significantly affected as part of these reductions.
Projected Impact Across Diverse Divisions
The anticipated layoffs may encompass multiple divisions within Amazon, notably the People Experience and Technology (human resources), Amazon Web Services (AWS), along devices and services.
This latest maneuver follows a report from Fortune suggesting a potential 15 percent reduction in the human resources workforce, with additional cuts expected throughout various sectors.
These impending layoffs represent a component of CEO Andy Jassy’s extensive cost-reduction strategy aimed at streamlining operations and enhancing organizational agility.
