Apple Launches Pre-orders for iPhone 17 and iPhone Air

At 7 p.m. on Friday, both Apple’s online store and authorized resellers commenced pre-orders for the highly anticipated iPhone 17 and iPhone Air models.

Although initial deliveries were expected by September 19, robust consumer interest swiftly overwhelmed numerous retail platforms, resulting in website outages and delivery delays.

Duc Trung from Ho Chi Minh City shared his experience of accessing Apple’s website precisely at launch time, but he was met with a waiting screen. Eventually, he managed to secure his first order by 7:07 p.m.

A futile attempt to purchase an additional device shortly thereafter revealed that estimated delivery times had been pushed back by two weeks.

On the Apple website, the 256GB orange and silver variants of the iPhone 17 Pro Max became unavailable for immediate dispatch, as did the 512GB orange model, with shipping estimates now extending into late September or early October.

Conversely, other color options, including green, remained available, alongside the iPhone Air and additional iPhone 17 Pro models.

Authorized retailers reported an unprecedented surge in demand.

ShopDunk indicated that the orange 256GB iPhone 17 Pro Max sold out within four minutes, while the 512GB variant was depleted by the ten-minute mark.

Websites for The Gioi Di Dong and FPT Shop faced operational difficulties, with The Gioi Di Dong subsequently reporting “record-breaking” deposits of 80,000 for the new iPhones within merely 30 minutes.

“During the first 15 minutes, we recorded over 9,500 deposits, predominantly for the iPhone 17 Pro Max,” stated Nguyen Quang Vinh, retail director at ShopDunk.

The orange variant represented a staggering 85% of pre-orders for this model. With such overwhelming interest, expectations for total sales of the iPhone 17 series—encompassing Air, Pro, and Pro Max—are projected to rise by 30% compared to last year.

Interest in the iPhone Air accounted for around 8% of total order deposits.

Representatives from FPT Shop corroborated these trends, noting that the iPhone 17 Pro Max constituted over 70% of all registrations.

“We anticipate that deliveries will be finalized by October 19,” remarked a company spokesperson.

Within FPT, the color orange dominated 60% of the orders for Pro and Pro Max, while silver and green followed at approximately 20% each. The green hue accounted for half of all iPhone Air orders.

Cellphones also reported exceptional demand, amassing about 20,000 orders for the latest iPhones within just four hours, with shipments commencing on September 19.

Such high enthusiasm for new iPhone colors is hardly unprecedented. Last year’s desert titanium iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB similarly sold out in three minutes.

Industry analysts suggest that the robust demand for unique color options is driven by consumers’ desire for visually distinct devices, which fosters a sense of exclusivity.

Retailers and manufacturers are also thought to deliberately limit initial inventory to cultivate hype and stimulate rapid sales.

Apple’s freshly unveiled iPhone lineup on September 9 showcases significant hardware advancements. The iPhone Air, measuring a mere 5.6mm in thickness, has emerged as the slimmest device in Apple’s history—thinner than its competitor flagships.

In parallel, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max have undergone redesigns featuring enlarged camera modules, an aluminum chassis for enhanced thermal regulation, and enhanced displays and processors.

Retailers attribute heightened prices to fluctuations in currency and taxation, yet they still predict that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be the leading seller, with a strong likelihood of selling out during its inaugural week.
