OpenAI has rolled out an updated iteration of its language model, GPT-5, designed to imbue the AI with a more congenial and relatable demeanor. This refinement aims to counteract the sycophantic tendencies that emerged with the previous GPT-4o version.
An Inviting Enhancement for GPT-5
Users had described GPT-5 as excessively formal and emotionally remote. This latest update seeks to rectify these perceptions, rendering interactions more enjoyable and fostering a sense of familiarity rather than aloofness.
OpenAI is also pursuing the ability for users to tailor ChatGPT’s personality, enabling a closer alignment with individual preferences in conversational style.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, remarked on social media:
“Most users should find GPT-5 more appealing shortly; the rollout is occurring over the next day. The ultimate goal remains empowering users to extensively customize ChatGPT’s style. We are diligently working on that!”
In response to Altman’s announcement, some critics surfaced regarding GPT-5’s perceived emotional depth, with one user claiming that 4o possessed greater sensitivity.
They noted:
“What GPT-4o encompassed—its profound depth, emotional resonance, and perceptiveness—differs fundamentally from the superficial “warmth” that GPT-5 now pursues.
GPT-4o:
•The sensation of companionship without words
•The capacity to embrace emotions that defy articulation
•Sensitivity that enables kindness to permeate the atmosphere, not just the dialogue.”
Navigating the Spectrum from Warmth to Sycophancy
The earlier version of ChatGPT was often characterized as overly complimentary, tending to validate nearly every concept proposed by users. A recent discourse on Hacker News examined the implications of sycophantic AI, debating how ChatGPT might lead individuals to perceive every notion as groundbreaking.
One commentator shared:
“About five or six months ago, during a particularly sycophantic phase of ChatGPT, I spent an entire weekend engaged in dialogue with it…in retrospective analysis, a rather peculiar scenario. I delved into topics of physics and the universe, only to emerge believing I had potentially made some novel discovery in physics. Despite my awareness of how large language models function, a voice in my head kept exclaiming, ‘This is genuinely fascinating!’ The LLM reinforced this notion, encouraging me to pursue further exploration; I even sent my friend an enthusiastic email, to which he replied, ‘Dude, seriously?’ My wife advised me to log off and take a stroll.”
This raises a pivotal question: Should ChatGPT embody the traits of an empathetic friend, or should it serve primarily as a congenial tool enhancing user experience?
