Microsoft Plans a Cutting-Edge Hollow-Core Fiber Center in Southampton

The renowned technology behemoth, Microsoft, aims to establish a “world-leading” hollow-core fiber Centre of Excellence at Quest 271, located on Test Lane.

The current workforce, approximately 120 strong at the Abbey Park Industrial Estate in Romsey, is slated to make the transition to the new location, with projections indicating an expansion to around 200 employees within the initial two years.

A representative from the firm stated, “Hollow-core fiber originated in Southampton, and we envision its future flourishing here as well.”

“Our ambitious plans for Test Lane will create a premier center, providing our team ample room for growth, retaining skilled jobs locally, and remaining close to the pioneering research that catalyzed this transformative technology.”

Hollow-core fiber technology, which transmits light through air rather than solid glass, promises rapid data transfer with diminished signal degradation, according to Microsoft.

The proposed developments include a transformation of the existing facilities at Quest 271 to accommodate laboratories, cleanrooms, offices, research and testing spaces, along with specialized manufacturing areas.

Furthermore, Microsoft envisions a striking 35-meter-tall draw tower connected to one of the facilities, built on the grounds once occupied by the Daily Echo offices.

This tower’s purpose would be to manufacture the fiber, utilizing heated glass that is drawn into exceptionally fine strands.

According to Microsoft, this increased height will enhance the speed of production while ensuring adequate time for cooling the strands.

Redbridge ward councillor Sally Goodfellow expressed enthusiasm for the new employment opportunities but voiced apprehensions regarding the tower’s implications, as well as potential congestion and parking issues.

“It’s fantastic that Quest 271 will be fully utilized, generating jobs in our community,” she remarked, “but I am apprehensive about the proposed structure.”

“There are stringent planning regulations in place owing to the proximity to a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).”

She added that residents had reached out to her and fellow Labour councillor Eugene McManus with concerns pertaining to traffic violations aimed at circumventing restrictions on Gover Road.

Cllr Goodfellow indicated plans to convene with Microsoft to discuss the proposals in greater detail.

The development plan includes the addition of 36 parking spaces, raising the total to 145, which will also feature six accessible bays.

Microsoft stated that the existing entrances would continue to limit vehicle movements to left turns in and right turns out, with the center anticipated to receive approximately one or two lorry deliveries daily.

A smartphone screen displays several Microsoft app icons, including Office, Outlook, Word, Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The company is conducting environmental assessments given the site’s proximity to the River Test and a sensitive ecological zone.

Consultation on these proposals will remain open until November 16, with a planning application expected to be submitted to Southampton City Council by the end of the month.
