TikTok Shop Poised for Significant Growth in Southeast Asia’s E-Commerce Arena

TikTok Shop is anticipated to command a remarkable 13.2 percent share of Southeast Asia’s e-commerce landscape in 2023, disrupting the established order among regional frontrunners.

According to insights from venture builder Momentum Works, the platform aims for a gross merchandise value (GMV) target of approximately US$15 billion this year.

This projected figure signifies a staggering increase from the US$4.4 billion recorded in the prior year, representing a more than threefold surge.

Such exponential growth positions the ByteDance entity to rival Indonesian market leader Tokopedia, which boasts an estimated 13.9 percent market share, while it steadily approaches Lazada’s 17.7 percent.

Beauty Products Fueling Volume Surge

The driving force behind TikTok Shop’s rapid regional expansion predominantly lies in personal care and beauty products.

This category alone constitutes 84 percent of all merchandise sold on the platform, contributing a substantial 70 percent of its total gross merchandise value.

Merchants and cosmetics brands strategically employ product bundling during their livestream sessions to amplify average order values.

By grouping skincare lotions, lip tints, and cleansers into discounted packages, sellers effectively stimulate higher volume purchases from viewers engaged in live product showcases.

This concentration on beauty mirrors the nascent phases of social commerce in mainland China, where small-scale impulse purchases established preliminary consumer habits before shoppers transitioned to electronics and household necessities.

Shopee Intensifies Livestreaming Competition in Indonesia

Despite TikTok Shop’s ascendance, market leader Shopee maintains a significant regional presence, projected to capture a commanding 46.5 percent market share in 2023.

In response, Sea Group is reallocating resources to enhance its own live shopping functionalities, particularly in key markets such as Indonesia, to safeguard its merchant clientele.

During the recent 7.7 shopping campaign in Indonesia, Shopee experienced a staggering twelvefold increase in transaction volumes via livestreaming channels in comparison to typical trading days, as reported by Sea Group chief executive Forrest Li during an earnings call.

This shift in spending underscores the necessity for traditional marketplace operators to invest resources into engagement strategies that were once considered ancillary.

For consumer brands and multi-channel retailers operating across Southeast Asia, the fragmentation of platform market shares necessitates a reevaluation of commercial strategies.

Sellers are increasingly moving away from solely depending on Shopee search placements or Lazada promotional events to sell inventory.

Consequently, marketing expenditures are shifting towards video creator networks, transforming the landscape of merchant acquisition costs and logistics frameworks throughout Jakarta.

Disruption Challenges Established Market Dynamics

Long-established marketplaces traditionally relied on the presumption that extensive merchant catalogs and entrenched logistics frameworks offered unbeatable competitive advantages.

However, the rise of video-centric buying models disrupts this narrative by integrating purchasing directly into entertainment feeds.

“The overarching theme is that within e-commerce, where leading players may exhibit a network effect and structural advantage, disruption remains feasible. Incumbents must consistently remain focused and vigilant,” remarked Weihan Chen, insights lead at Momentum Works.

Chen emphasized that established players are encountering structural pressures, regardless of whether TikTok Shop functions merely as a social platform or evolves into a comprehensive marketplace operator.

This threat is particularly pronounced in Indonesia, the largest retail market in Southeast Asia, where ByteDance has orchestrated extensive offline campaigns to recruit merchants and host creator summits.

With notable success in the beauty segment, the platform is now confronted with the formidable challenge of developing delivery infrastructures and merchant networks capable of managing larger, higher-value consumer goods without compromising profit margins.

A sign with the word Market is mounted on a black frame against a red brick wall.

Momentum Works plans to publish an extensive dataset detailing market shares within Southeast Asia’s digital commerce sector in an imminent research report, providing insights into the full-year regional gross merchandise volume figures.
