Apple Sets Stage for Launch of Apple Intelligence in China
Apple has confirmed that its anticipated Apple Intelligence will debut for iPhone users in mainland China with the rollout of iOS 27.3, slated for December.
The testing phase is set to commence with the latest iOS developer beta beginning November 4, according to China Standard Time.
Eligible iPhones for Apple Intelligence in China
The list of qualifying devices for Apple Intelligence in China is concise and comprises the following models:
- iPhone 16 series (all models) and subsequent iterations
- iPhone Duo
- iPhone Air
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
Conversely, the following models are excluded from eligibility:
- iPhone 15
- iPhone 15 Plus
- All preceding iPhone models
The standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are omitted due to the stringent hardware stipulations of Apple Intelligence, mirroring conditions in other markets.
Users of both the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max from the same release year are, however, included in this rollout.
For the features to function, users must ensure that their Siri and device languages are set to Simplified Chinese or English.
Timeline for iOS 27.3 Deployment
The testing of features will begin for developers on November 4 via the latest iOS developer beta, while the broader public in mainland China will receive the functionalities with the official iOS 27.3 launch in December.
Apple has yet to specify an exact date within December for this rollout. Following the necessary regulatory approvals, updates for Mac, iPad, and other Apple platforms are expected, though no dates have been disclosed for those products either.
Features Included in the Initial Launch
Apple has unveiled a host of features for the inaugural launch in China:
- Live Translation: Available in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, alongside in-person translation via compatible AirPods.
- Writing Tools: This includes options to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text, with an additional Qwen-powered Compose feature.
- Visual Intelligence: Enhanced photo tools for Cleanup, natural-language search, and Memory movie creation.
- Genmoji.
- Mail Features: Priority Messages, Mail summaries, and Smart Reply functionality for Messages.
- Notifications: Summaries of notifications, Priority Notifications, and a Reduce Interruptions Focus mode.
- Notes and Calls: Audio transcription summaries for Notes and call transcripts.
- Siri: Introduction of Type to Siri and a more contextually aware Siri.
Live Translation functionalities through AirPods require the use of AirPods 5, AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro 2 or later, or AirPods Max 2. Additionally, these earbuds must be updated with the latest firmware and paired with a qualifying iPhone.
The Role of Alibaba’s Qwen
Apple has indicated that the features operate on generative models developed internally. Nevertheless, Alibaba’s Qwen model serves as a supplementary component in select features of Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence, facilitating both text and image comprehension.
Siri can escalate specific requests to Qwen—such as inquiries regarding photos and documents like PDFs or presentations. Within Writing Tools, the Compose functionality harnesses Qwen to generate original text from scratch.
To utilize Qwen, users must log in with a Qwen account or via the Sign in with Apple feature. This sign-in step is particularly significant for those who wish to maintain their data within Apple’s proprietary models.
What Remains Absent: The Siri AI Component
Despite the anticipated enhancements, Apple has clarified that this update will not encompass Siri AI or the advanced Apple Intelligence features showcased at WWDC 2026.
For regions outside of China, the iOS 27.2 update has provided Siri AI with memory capabilities, app controls, and support for five different languages.

In mainland China, the forthcoming December update will only integrate the current suite of Apple Intelligence features, omitting the latest assistant functionalities.
