Apple has unveiled its highly anticipated new iPad mini, featuring an impressive 8.5-inch OLED display, a powerful A20 Pro chip, and an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance.

The starting price in the United States is set at $699 for the Wi-Fi model and $849 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular iteration. Pre-orders will commence on October 28, with the official availability slated for November 6.

Expanded OLED Display Within a Compact Design

The Super Retina XDR display expands to 8.5 inches while maintaining the original mini’s dimensions. This enhancement is achieved through a remarkable 24 percent reduction in bezel thickness.

The tablet itself boasts a sleek profile, measuring merely 5.4 mm thick, available in either midnight or starlight finishes.

In terms of brightness, the device reaches a peak of 1200 nits, more than doubling the previous model’s capabilities. It offers full-screen brightness at 600 nits, coupled with a staggering contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1.

For low-light environments, the screen can dim to an impressive 1 nit. A nano-texture glass option is also provided to reduce glare, although this feature is confined to the 256GB and 512GB configurations, as detailed on its iPad mini product page.

“With a remarkably thinner and lighter design, a stunning new OLED display, the incredibly powerful A20 Pro, and water and dust resistance, the new iPad mini is a huge leap forward for users who love having the full iPad experience in the palm of their hand.”

A20 Pro Performance Enhancements and Video Call Innovations

The A20 Pro leverages Apple’s sophisticated 2-nanometer manufacturing process, drawing inspiration from its M-series chips.

Each core in its 7-core GPU is equipped with a Neural Accelerator, resulting in performance increases; Apple claims a remarkable up to 4.5 times faster LLM token generation compared to the A17 Pro in the previous iPad mini.

Furthermore, it touts up to 2.7 times enhancements in graphics capability and up to 60 percent improvements in multithreaded CPU performance. Notably, the 512GB variant features a Dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Additionally, the 12MP Center Stage front camera has been repositioned to the landscape edge, enhancing the video calling experience.

The rear 12MP camera now includes Smart HDR 4, enables 4K recording at rates up to 60 fps, and features an Adaptive True Tone flash.

Complementing these advancements is the introduction of Acoustic Display audio technology, which channels sound through the display using woofers and tweeters positioned between the glass and aluminum. Image: Apple

Connectivity, Siri AI Features, and Charging Capabilities

The N1 chip facilitates Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread connectivity options. For cellular models, the inclusion of a C2 modem and eSIM enhances performance, with claims of up to 50 percent faster cellular data rates compared to previous generations.

The new tablet operates on iPadOS 27, though the Siri AI feature will be available in beta starting with iPadOS 27.2. Current limitations restrict its access within the European Union and to users under 13.

Apple also asserts that the device offers all-day battery life, with fast charging capabilities that can achieve approximately 50 percent charge in around 30 minutes when using a compatible adapter.

Storage Capacities, Accessories, and Release Information

Available storage configurations include 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB, with educational pricing in the U.S. beginning at $649.

Accessories are sold separately: the TechWoven Smart Folio costs $79, the Apple Pencil Pro retails at $129, and the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is priced at $79.

The IP67 rating comes with caveats. Apple’s controlled testing has demonstrated immersion resistance up to 1 meter for a period of 30 minutes, adhering to IEC standard 60529.

However, this resistance is not permanent, and liquid damage is not covered by warranty.

Pre-orders are set to begin on October 28 across 36 countries and regions, including the U.S., with customer deliveries and in-store availability commencing on November 6.
