Best Buy’s Strategic Integration of Artificial Intelligence
Best Buy is set to intensify its utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) across various operational facets by 2026. The company’s executive leadership has unveiled broader aspirations regarding the deployment of AI to attain immediate business goals.
During her address at the UBS Global Consumer and Retail Conference in March, Best Buy CEO Corie Barry underscored AI’s role as “a significant enabler of growth” and as a catalyst for enhanced employee satisfaction.
While she initially focused on AI tools as internal solutions for employee challenges, she delineated plans for these technologies to enhance customer interactions as well.
Since this announcement, Best Buy has enacted customer-oriented AI initiatives, notably electing to harness OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Ranked eighth in the Top 1000 Database, Best Buy is recognized for its substantial annual e-commerce sales among North America’s largest online retailers.
Additionally, Best Buy has secured the 200th position in Digital Commerce 360’s AI Rankings, available in the Top 1000 Pro with AI Database.
Internal Enhancements via AI at Best Buy
“I had an employee who — in a remarkable feat over the weekend — re-engineered and developed an agent for all our employee tools,” Barry remarked in March.
This newly crafted internal AI agent, as described by Barry, responds to textual inquiries, substantially improving response accuracy through advanced information-scraping capabilities.
“Our employees can now ask simple yet crucial questions like ‘I’m new here, what forms do I need to complete?’ and receive relevant answers,” she explained.
“Moreover, that agent will evolve to also address customer support issues, as agents possess capacity beyond single-task functions.”
Crucially, Barry highlighted that the agent is effectively “resolving customer queries” as well, with implications for marketing and audience segmentation.
“Some of our most impactful applications include audience creation, allowing us to incorporate external data signals,” she said.
By leveraging internal datasets, Best Buy seeks AI-driven insights to refine its audience targeting strategies.
“Now, I can employ large language models (LLMs) to aggregate data and accurately pinpoint how to reach specific customers,” Barry noted.
“If a customer has become inactive, I can engage them at opportune moments based on prevailing demand signals, ultimately enhancing our ability to reconnect them with the brand.”
Introduction of Ask Blue Shopping Assistant
In August, Best Buy unveiled its latest customer-centric shopping assistant, Ask Blue. During the Q2 earnings call, Jason Bonfig, senior executive vice president and chief customer, product, and fulfillment officer, emphasized the multi-faceted expertise incorporated into Ask Blue to optimize shopper experiences.
“I’m thrilled to announce the launch of Ask Blue, our new conversational AI shopping and support assistant,” he said. “This tool amalgamates the knowledge across Best Buy’s website into a cohesive and user-friendly platform.”
Bonfig characterized Ask Blue as a value-added tool designed for online shoppers.
“It synthesizes product insights, support options, resources, customer feedback, availability, and pricing, all aimed at empowering customers to make well-informed choices,” he remarked.
“Ask Blue will facilitate customers in discerning which technology suits their requirements best.”
He provided examples demonstrating its capabilities, such as assisting with product comparisons, clarifying critical distinctions, verifying compatibility, and escalating issues to human support representatives if necessary.
Collaborative Ventures with OpenAI for Enhanced Online Shopping
Best Buy is additionally exploring innovative methods for online shoppers to navigate its product offerings through AI-driven channels.
“We continue to collaborate with AI entities like OpenAI to ensure our presence in venues where customers seek technology and guidance,”
Bonfig remarked during the August earnings call, where he is poised to assume the CEO position on November 1.
He elucidated Best Buy’s recent “commerce integration with OpenAI,” which the company proudly features in its holiday initiatives geared towards product discovery and gift selection.

“Customers can now explore products, obtain personalized recommendations, and finalize purchases directly through ChatGPT,” Bonfig informed analysts.
“We perceive this as a pivotal development in expanding our digital ecosystem and positioning Best Buy at the cutting edge of emerging AI-enhanced commercial experiences.”
