During a significant state visit to Washington on Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping asserted that both China and the United States bear a profound “responsibility” to maintain human oversight in the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI).

Hours prior to Xi’s comments, China’s commerce ministry publicized the inaugural discussions between its senior trade representatives and their U.S. counterparts regarding AI matters, according to a report by CNBC. President Trump also mentioned on social media that AI was poised to be a focal point of their meeting.
“A monumental day with President Xi of China. Super Intelligence (SI) will be a significant element of our discourse, but I wish to let it remain precisely where it is. This aligns with China’s stance too. Our safeguard lies with the Department of Justice,” Trump affirmed.
Trump Celebrates Strong Relations; Xi Underlines Interlinked Fortunes
On the second day of Xi’s visit, President Trump articulated his sentiments, stating he has cultivated “a truly great friendship…anchored in mutual respect and the essential interests of our people,” as reported by the Associated Press.
In response, Xi emphasized that despite the differences between the two nations, their “deeply intertwined” interests present an opportunity to “cultivate mutual trust.”
Furthermore, he extended an invitation for 100,000 American youth to experience student exchanges in China over the next five years.
“Just as our nations collaborated to triumph in World War II, President Xi and I will persist in our joint efforts to sculpt a brighter future for both our countries,” Trump remarked in brief introductory comments at the White House, evoking historical parallels.
Additionally, the agenda encompasses pivotal topics, including Taiwan, trade, and relations with Tehran, which are paramount for the ongoing Xi-Trump discussions.
‘Let Competition Be a Positive Force, Not a Clash’: Xi’s Perspective
In his opening statements, Xi acknowledged the necessity of addressing competition between the two nations. However, he advocated that such rivalry must be “healthy and contained.”
“It should resemble a race to advance together, rather than a struggle where one emerges victorious at the expense of the other,” PTI news agency relayed Xi’s remarks.
He affirmed a philosophy of “coexistence in harmony,” asserting that cooperation between China and the U.S.—as pivotal states—will yield mutual benefits, while confrontation will invariably lead to loss for both parties.
