Google Collaborates with Indian Authorities to Combat Child Sexual Abuse Material

A spokesperson from Google has verified a significant development regarding child safety on digital platforms, announcing that the company intends to share pertinent information about child sexual abuse cases with the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

This move places Google in alignment with Meta India, which has already agreed to disclose details of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) incidents and information pertaining to individuals identified as repeat offenders.

The Google spokesperson elaborated on this initiative, stating that the firm has “proposed to operationalise the provision of relevant information to the I4C in cases related to CSAM.”

“We are profoundly dedicated to combating CSAM online and ensuring that our platforms do not facilitate the creation, storage, or distribution of such material. We invest heavily in detecting, deterring, removing, and reporting instances of CSAM,” elaborated the spokesperson.

Sources indicate that Google has formally communicated this initiative to both the I4C and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, outlining the rationale behind this proactive measure.

Information regarding CSAM cases is expected to be transmitted to the I4C as soon as the necessary technical infrastructure is established.

Safeguarding children on our platforms is our foremost priority. We are resolutely committed to collaborating with the government to ensure that offenders are held accountable for their heinous crimes.

In a bid to enhance our collective efforts, Meta will now report child safety issues directly to the cybercrime portal administered by I4C, noted a representative from Meta.

This dialogue stems from a previous engagement between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, headed by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Meta’s Chief of Global Affairs, Joel Kaplan, during his visit to New Delhi in August.

Historically, social media platforms based in the United States, including Google and Meta, had been directing reports of CSAM solely to the National Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), a private nonprofit entity based in the US. NCMEC was responsible for relaying repeat offender information to local law enforcement agencies.

This procedural delay has often hindered Indian law enforcement from launching timely interventions in critical CSAM cases, particularly those involving children coerced into producing exploitative or suggestive materials.

It is worth noting that under federal law, Google, Meta, and all US-based social media corporations are mandated to report any instances of CSAM to NCMEC.

Noncompliance with this requirement exposes these companies to potential criminal prosecution, financial penalties, and forfeiture of safe harbor protections.
