Apple Store Employees in Italy Strike Amid iPhone 18 Pro Launch
On Friday, coinciding with the debut of the new iPhone 18 Pro, employees at Italian Apple Stores initiated a strike to protest their working conditions.
This latest iteration of the iconic smartphone from the American tech behemoth has garnered significant attention.
The strike is set to persist throughout the day, as announced by the trade unions Filcams CGIL, Fisascat CISL, and Uiltucs, with organized picket lines expected outside select Apple locations.
In the heart of Milan, a vibrant gathering of workers convened outside Apple’s renowned glass-cube store, brandishing red flags and creating raucous sounds with whistles and rattles, as eager customers queued to enter the establishment.
“For Apple, maintaining a positive public image is paramount,” remarked Nicholas Pezze, a representative from Filcams CGIL. “As unions, we deemed this an opportune moment to visibly express the concerns of the workforce we represent.”
The strike impacts over 1,600 employees across 17 Apple stores, according to Fisascat CISL’s announcement from the previous week.
An Apple spokesperson maintained that regular operations would continue at their outlets. “Our retail and online stores are functioning as usual today, and we are enthusiastic about welcoming our customers,” the spokesperson stated.
The global launch of the iPhone 18 Pro took place on Friday, alongside the unveiling of the Duo, Apple’s inaugural foldable smartphone, set to be available on October 23.
In Italy, the entry-level price for the iPhone 18 Pro is set at €1,489 ($1,710), based on listings from Apple’s online platform.
Union representatives highlighted that the introduction of the new iPhone necessitates additional effort from retail staff, whose responsibilities are becoming increasingly convoluted and primarily focused on customer service.
“Conversations with employees revealed a deterioration in their working conditions, with insufficient regard for their well-being,” the Filcams CGIL stated in a formal announcement.

- Recruitment of additional staff
- Transition of fixed-term employees to permanent contracts
- Offering part-time workers the opportunity to extend their hours if desired
In response, an Apple spokesperson asserted that the company takes pride in providing “industry-leading compensation and benefits,” emphasizing its commitment to comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, in addition to mental health and wellness support programs.
