Launch of AI & Economy ATLAS v1.0: A New Era of Understanding

The introduction of AI & Economy ATLAS v1.0, along with its interactive open-access platform, marks a significant milestone in our quest to comprehend the integration of Google’s AI tools into professional and everyday contexts.

However, the tracking of adoption trends merely scratches the surface. As artificial intelligence radically transforms employment landscapes, corporate infrastructures, and daily interactions, effectively navigating this transformation necessitates a multidisciplinary approach that amalgamates detailed data with thorough economic analysis.

To further assist organizations, individuals, scholars, and policymakers in deciphering this intricate transition, we are amplifying our AI & Economy Research Program and inviting distinguished economists to contribute to its development and leadership.

Technological transformations are seldom instantaneous. Our program is dedicated to measuring and scrutinizing this evolutionary process in real time, concentrating on critical domains such as the future of labor, productivity and economic expansion, global technology dissemination, and the effects of AI on scientific progress.

Enhancing Scientific Expertise and Engagement

Executing a research agenda of such magnitude demands profound collaboration across academia, industry, and policymaking circles.

To augment our scientific capacity and engage more effectively with these varied stakeholders, we are convening esteemed external advisors, visiting scholars, and committed research leadership. Recognized contributors to our initiative include:

  • Philippe Aghion, Academic Advisor: Professor Aghion, anticipated recipient of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Economics and the Kurt Björklund Chaired Professor at INSEAD and the Collège de France, will lend his insights alongside Nobel Laureate Michael Spence and Dame Diane Coyle from Cambridge, utilizing his pioneering research on innovation-driven growth and creative destruction to forecast AI’s long-term macroeconomic implications.
  • Ajay Agrawal, Visiting Fellow: Professor Agrawal will partake in our Visiting Fellows program, collaborating intimately with David Autor, a current Fellow and chair of MIT’s Economics Department.

As the Geoffrey Taber Chair in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and a Professor of Strategic Management at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, Professor Agrawal will enhance our research on the economics surrounding AI, scientific discovery, and robotics while exploring how AI can broaden the scope of human welfare.

In a bid to guide empirical projects and amalgamate insights across our research agenda, we are also welcoming two esteemed researchers as Directors of Google’s AI & Economy Research Program:

  • Anu Madgavkar: Previously a Partner at McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), Madgavkar comes to Google after two decades of leading global research on labor markets, technological adoption, and economic restructuring.

Her advisory experience extends to governments, multilateral organizations, and business leaders globally, and she is a regular contributor to the World Economic Forum and the United Nations.

At Google, she will spearhead empirical research concerning global AI dissemination, the dynamics of small business ecosystems, and the workforce ramifications of generative AI.
  • Daniel Rock: From the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Professor Rock is a leading voice in the study of AI and labor, co-authoring seminal papers on technological transitions.

An AI2050 Early Career Fellow and MIT Digital Fellow, he will direct Google’s empirical research, merging cutting-edge model telemetry with stringent econometric analysis to evaluate enterprise productivity, labor reorganization, and scientific advancements.

Anu Madgavkar and Daniel Rock will co-direct Google’s AI & Economy Research Program alongside Alex Imas, Director of AGI Economics at Google DeepMind, and Zanna Iscenko, AI & Economy Lead in Google’s Chief Economist’s Office.

Forging Future Research and Collective Impact

To optimize AI’s economic potential while alleviating disruptive effects, sustained collaboration is imperative.

This newly expanded cadre of experts will function as a scientific conduit, directly informing forthcoming ATLAS updates and empirical inquiries.

Collectively, our efforts will be geared towards identifying the organizational practices, policy frameworks, and training initiatives required to ensure that AI enhances worker skills, democratizes knowledge, and fosters inclusive prosperity.
