OpenAI Collaborates with Competitors on AI Safety Initiatives
OpenAI has announced a collaborative effort with competitors Anthropic and Google DeepMind focused on artificial intelligence (AI) safety protocols.
This joint endeavor seeks to address growing concerns among legislators and the public, who fear that unregulated AI models pose significant economic and national security threats, as reported by Bloomberg.
During a press conference in Washington on September 15, Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s global policy chief, disclosed the ongoing discussions among the three pioneering companies, which have been in progress for several weeks.
A recent CNN report corroborated these discussions, indicating a unified commitment to enhancing AI safety.
When addressing potential regulatory inquiries about the nature of their collaboration, Lehane reassured attendees that the tech giants do not require an antitrust exemption to collaborate on safety measures and share valuable insights. He remarked, “It’s better to try to work together to prioritize safety.”
Debate on AI Development Pace Intensifies Following Anthropic CEO’s Open Letter
The urgency surrounding possible catastrophic risks escalated over the weekend following a substantial 3,800-word open letter penned by Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic.
In his letter, Amodei urged development laboratories to deliberately slow the advancement of cutting-edge AI models, allowing computer scientists the necessary time to identify and mitigate emergent hazards.
This call to action garnered rapid endorsements from prominent technology figures, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman and xAI’s Elon Musk, who both resonated with the underlying concerns.
In defending the alliance among rival firms, Lehane highlighted the historical precedent of collaboration for consumer safety, likening the relationship to the aviation industry, where competitors frequently contribute to safety enhancements.
“There are many instances over time where companies are trying to help each other on safety,” he remarked.
OpenAI Engages with Lawmakers on Governance Legislation
Lehane’s engagement in the capital was marked by direct interactions with American legislators. He asserted OpenAI’s readiness to support bipartisan initiatives aimed at countering potentially disastrous technological scenarios.

Among the proposed legislative frameworks that have garnered OpenAI’s favor are a federal regulatory blueprint developed by Republican Representative Jay Obernolte and Democratic Representative Lori Trahan, alongside emerging bipartisan Senate legislation spearheaded by Majority Leader John Thune, Republican Ted Cruz, and Democrat Amy Klobuchar. This legislation specifically seeks to avert catastrophic computational harms.
