New Fund Launches to Bridge Investment Gap for South African Startups

Grindstone Ventures, a pioneering venture capital firm helmed by women in South Africa, has unveiled a substantial fund worth USD 31 million, poised to address the critical financing void between seed funding and institutional investment for technology startups poised for growth.

This new fund, amounting to ZAR 500 million, specifically targets firms that find themselves at the precarious juncture between initial commercial validation and Series A financing.

Backed by Knife Capital, a firm dedicated to venture investment and strategic corporate exits, alongside Thinkroom, an organization devoted to developing entrepreneurship, Grindstone Ventures aims to facilitate the ascension of burgeoning businesses.

Following its inaugural fund, Grindstone Ventures Fund I, which successfully allocated resources among seven startups such as Locstat, Welo, and AgriLogiQ, the management team is currently orchestrating an exit strategy for this initial portfolio to return capital to its limited partners.

For the newly launched fund, the investment crew anticipates distributing funds across approximately 15 to 20 enterprises within South Africa and select markets throughout the continent. The initial funding target is pegged at ZAR 150 million, equivalent to USD 9.3 million.

This financial vehicle addresses a well-known funding limitation within the regional landscape. Under the adept leadership of Thandiwe Maqetuka, the fund aims to acquire significant ownership stakes while extending support to founders regarding governance, commercial expansion, and market penetration. Keet van Zyl, co-founder of Knife Capital, underscored the pressing financing challenges that entrepreneurs face.

“The transition from seed funding to Series A represents one of the most pronounced gaps in the African venture capital ecosystem,” commented van Zyl.

“Insights gained from the first Grindstone Ventures fund illuminated exactly where this gap manifests, and this new fund provides us with the means to bridge it.”

Grindstone Ventures aligns its financial aspirations with targeted demographic objectives regarding corporate ownership.

The investment strategy is intentionally crafted to ensure at least 50 percent of its portfolio comprises black-owned enterprises, all while promoting gender equity among founders and executive teams.

“This is emblematic of Africa’s elusive middle ground. Our goal transcends the mere provision of capital; we aim to identify outstanding enterprises at an early stage, invest where funds are still sparse, secure meaningful ownership interests, and partner actively with founders to cultivate businesses capable of scaling, attracting institutional funding, and ultimately delivering tangible returns,” articulated Maqetuka.

The management team perceives these demographic aspirations as congruous with traditional venture capital success metrics. Maqetuka delineated the fund’s dual mission concerning diversity and fiscal performance.

“We contend that investors should not be compelled to choose between robust financial outcomes and fostering a more inclusive investment landscape,” asserted Maqetuka.

“Our foremost obligation is to act as responsible custodians of investor assets. However, by generating robust commercial returns while drawing greater institutional investment towards exceptional black and female entrepreneurs—who have historically encountered barriers to access—we can initiate a transformative shift in the marketplace.”
