The Intriguing Intersection of AI and Game Development in Grand Theft Auto VI

The most candid observation regarding the interplay between artificial intelligence and the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI emanated from an individual actively attempting to replicate it.

Ziwen Xu dedicated his summer to crafting a clone of GTA 6, employing a series of AI agents in a bid to deliver a product reminiscent of Grand Theft Auto ahead of Rockstar Games’ official release on November 19.

Recently, he announced on social media that he’s procuring a PlayStation 5 with the intention of playing and streaming the game.

XU’s efforts should not be dismissed; he has not been deterred by initial setbacks. In fact, he has intensified his commitment to this endeavor, albeit with a new approach.

For those unfamiliar with his journey, Xu commenced his project in June, directing a cadre of AI agents to tackle the formidable task of game development.

He documented his progress daily, achieving significant milestones. A barren landscape transformed into a blue oval, followed by the introduction of characters, non-player characters (NPCs), vehicles, combat mechanics, and a functional menu that, in his words, “boots like a AAA game.”

When advised by the community to adopt a more serious framework, he transitioned from the Godot engine to Unreal, ultimately creating a fascinating visual spectacle for several days.

However, the undertaking encountered a formidable obstacle that AI could not surmount.

Legal Entanglements and Creative Constraints

By using GTA as the foundational template for his game, Xu inadvertently ventured into murky legal waters.

Months after his initial launch, he dismantled the original project in August, opting instead to reconstruct it as an original game titled Caliber, or CALI, which features its own unique universe and characters.

It became evident that crafting a GTA 6 imitation was fraught with challenges, as the core elements that define GTA belong exclusively to Rockstar.

Beyond legal woes, Xu grappled with technical limitations in his project. Initially, the AI agents enthusiastically constructed a skyline reminiscent of Los Angeles, although the intent was to evoke Miami’s distinctive ambiance.

Unfortunately, the AI lacked the creative foresight necessary to replicate a Vice City that resonated with authenticity.

As the scope of the world expanded, the frame rate plummeted to a dismal one frame per second, necessitating the implementation of yet another AI tool to remedy the situation.

Rethinking AI’s Role in Game Development

Does this imply that AI is ineffective simply because it requires additional tools to rectify problems it has created? Surely not.

CALI continues to exist and is expected to thrive for the foreseeable future. A year ago, few solo developers could reach such levels of achievement solely through prompts.

Yet the reality remains: an agent loop is still inadequate for producing a game reminiscent of GTA 6, and may never accomplish such a feat.

This predicament transcends an AI deficiency. No human or studio has the capacity to generate a product akin to GTA 6.

This magnum opus is the culmination of thirteen years of unwavering dedication, birthed from a studio in Los Angeles committed to meticulously art-directing individual pedestrians, crafting over 600,000 unique NPC animations, engaging more than 50 professional street artists for mural designs, and collaborating with race-car drivers for optimal vehicle handling.

Digital Foundry has lauded this meticulous energy as the most remarkable real-time rendering they have ever observed.

An AI agent, no matter how indefatigable, lacks the ability to conceive something genuinely original. It may mimic architecture, but it cannot grasp the rationale behind a structure’s placement, nor can it evoke the emotional response associated with cruising past a corner in Leonida at dusk.

Humans possess that innate ability, which is why GTA 6 eschews the use of generative AI. Rockstar has emphasized that this creation is entirely handcrafted, potentially marking the last AAA title produced exclusively by human ingenuity.

The summer’s developments presented a compelling natural experiment: one game fashioned entirely by human labor spanning over a decade, and another conceived entirely through AI agents within a matter of months, striving for identical objectives.

Only one is currently enjoying a historic marketing campaign, outperforming Netflix and selling out consoles amidst a price increase.

The word “MARKETING” spelled out in colorful, patterned block letters on a plain white background.

When even the individual placing bets on AI expresses a desire to engage with the game crafted by human hands, the conclusion becomes glaringly evident. AI may assist in the game development process, but it cannot independently envision its essence.
