SpaceX Acquires Anysphere and Faces OpenAI Fallout

In a noteworthy development, SpaceX officially announced a substantial deal to purchase Anysphere, the innovative startup behind the coding tool Cursor, for an astounding US$60 billion, finalized in June.

As of Friday, August 28, 2026, OpenAI declared its intention to cease the provision of artificial intelligence models to Cursor, a company now under the ownership of Elon Musk’s SpaceX. This decision intensifies the longstanding rivalry between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Musk.

The acquisition was finalized earlier this month, marking a significant milestone for SpaceX. “We are compelled to make this decision due to concerns that SpaceX may not adhere to our technology’s terms of service, informed by historical breaches involving Elon Musk’s enterprises,” OpenAI expounded in a recent blog entry.

Michael Truell, a co-founder of Cursor and now an executive at SpaceX, stated that discussions with the OpenAI team are underway to address the existing issues.

“Cursor was among the earliest adopters of OpenAI’s technology, collaborating closely with their team for several years. We have relied on their platform as neutral infrastructure essential for our operations,” Truell conveyed in an X post.

The discord between Musk and Altman has persisted for several years, escalating to a trial where Musk’s counsel claimed that both Musk and other witnesses had accused Altman of dishonesty, while OpenAI contended that Musk sought to exert control over the organization.

As the wealthiest individual globally, Musk had previously taken legal action against OpenAI for US$150 billion, alleging that Altman and the organization had “ensnared a charity” by straying from its initial nonprofit ethos for personal gain.

A federal jury dismissed Musk’s claims earlier this year, determining that he had filed the lawsuit beyond the permissible time frame.

In its blog post, OpenAI asserted that X, previously recognized as Twitter and now part of SpaceX, had contravened the stipulations of its contract subsequent to Musk’s acquisition of the platform.

“When collaborating with a substantial entity like SpaceX, we customarily rely on tailored agreements to guarantee adherence to our terms of service and to ensure that integrations maintain safety at scale,” the AI organization elaborated.

The ChatGPT creator suggested a termination date of November 12, 2026, underscoring that its contract with Cursor permitted a limited timeframe for annulment following any “change of control.”
