Apple Expands OLED Display Inventory Amid Market Volatility
In a notable strategic maneuver, Apple is extending its OLED display inventory buffer from four weeks to six weeks as it gears up for the forthcoming unveiling of the iPhone 18 Pro series and its inaugural foldable smartphone next month.
This proactive step is designed to secure existing panel prices before an anticipated surge in upstream material costs.
This decision, however, appears paradoxical, as Apple is concurrently applying pressure on its suppliers, Samsung Display and LG Display, to reduce panel prices by approximately 20 percent for the soon-to-be-released iPhone 18 Pro Max.
This juxtaposition highlights a supply chain bracing for inflationary pressures fueled by dwindling raw materials and emerging, costlier display technologies.
Traditionally, Apple maintains a four-week buffer of essential components ahead of major product launches.
By extending this to six weeks and instituting it as a long-term policy, the company is signaling considerable apprehension regarding price stability within the display market.
Sources privy to the situation indicate that the inflation of memory chips is the principal concern, with cascading effects now impacting other components, including OLED panels.
Recent supply chain analyses revealed that Apple has requested its primary Korean suppliers to lower the OLED unit cost for the iPhone 18 Pro Max to around $70. Industry assessments suggest that the actual procurement price could dip as low as $66.50 per unit—a decrease of nearly 20 percent compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Lee Cheong, President of Samsung Display, publicly acknowledged the pressures, characterizing the current operating environment as exceptionally challenging as device manufacturers exert relentless pressure on component suppliers to implement steep price reductions. Executives from LG Display have echoed this sentiment, confirming similar pricing pressures.
Market research firm Sigmaintell reported in its second-quarter 2026 panel price analysis that flexible OLED prices are under significant pressure, driven by an imbalance between supply and demand, along with aggressive pricing from international competitors.
Rigid OLED panels are experiencing comparable, and in some instances, even steeper price declines.
Nevertheless, Sigmaintell also cautioned about rising upstream costs that could exert upward pressure on panel prices in the latter part of the year.
This escalation is largely attributed to the organic light-emitting compounds integral to OLED panels. The phosphorescent properties of these compounds rely on iridium complexes, which are primarily mined in South Africa and Russia—regions currently affected by geopolitical tensions that disrupt supply chains.
The production of iridium is also contingent upon platinum and nickel outputs, limiting the industry’s ability to swiftly scale up supply in response to demand surges.
Moreover, both iPhone 18 Pro models will employ high-end panels constructed with Samsung Display’s blue phosphorescent emitting material, a technology associated with a higher unit cost.
The nascent supply infrastructure further complicates the situation, potentially presenting a bottleneck for Apple.
This amalgamation of factors elucidates Apple’s urgency to bolster inventory while simultaneously negotiating lower prices. By placing substantial orders now, Apple aims to lock in current pricing ahead of anticipated cost increases.
This strategy also grants panel manufacturers enhanced visibility for production planning—an arrangement industry observers deem advantageous for both parties.
However, the cost savings derived from lower display prices are unlikely to be reflected in reduced retail prices for consumers. Any savings on OLED panels are expected to be counterbalanced by significant increases in memory chip costs.
Market research firm TrendForce estimates that escalating component prices, predominantly due to memory, have inflated the total bill of materials for the iPhone 18 Pro by nearly 40 percent.
The portion of memory in hardware costs is projected to surge from 10 percent last year to 34 percent in the third quarter of 2026.
In contrast, the newer, advanced processor, constructed using a cutting-edge manufacturing process, has remained largely static as a share of total expense.
This cost pressure signals an impending price increase for the new iPhones. Reports indicate that the starting price for the iPhone 18 Pro in the United States may be set at $1,399, reflecting a $300 rise from the previous generation.
In addition to the Pro models, Apple plans to introduce the iPhone Ultra—its first foray into the foldable smartphone market.
This device is expected to feature a 5.5-inch external display that unfolds into a 7.8-inch internal screen.
While the Ultra will be unveiled during the September event, production challenges may defer its actual availability until the fourth quarter.
The foldable smartphone enters a competitive landscape dominated by Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which features an 8-inch inner panel and a 6.5-inch cover screen, both exceeding Apple’s speculated dimensions.

Counterpoint Research anticipates that Apple will capture 25 percent of global foldable shipments in its debut year, trailing Samsung’s 32 percent but surpassing Huawei’s 24 percent.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple has charted a roadmap for its foldable devices extending through 2028.
A second-generation model is scheduled for 2027, with no substantial design changes, followed by a third-generation iteration as early as 2028 featuring slightly enlarged screens on both sides.
The September event is particularly significant as it marks the first major product launch under incoming CEO John Ternus, a veteran in hardware engineering who has overseen product development across various Apple lines, including iPad, Mac, AirPods, Watch, and iPhone.
While the products to be revealed were largely developed under outgoing CEO Tim Cook, the launch will be closely scrutinized for insights into Ternus’s strategic vision.
In addition to the new iPhones, Apple is anticipated to refresh the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, unveil an updated HomePod mini with enhanced chip functionality for on-device AI, and introduce a new Apple TV 4K powered by the A17 Pro chip—the same processor that initially enabled Apple Intelligence support in the iPhone 15 Pro.
The event is tentatively set for September 9, with pre-orders expected to commence on September 12.
