Transition at Google DeepMind Marks a New Era in AI Development
When Sir Demis Hassabis described the advent of artificial intelligence as ushering in a “pivotal moment in human history” last month, he anticipated imminent change on a personal level.
This week, the Nobel Prize-winning leader of Google DeepMind, Google’s artificial intelligence division, announced his intention to step back from daily operational duties as chief executive and assume the role of chair.
Additionally, Hassabis will transition to the position of chief scientist at DeepMind’s parent company, Alphabet.
Hassabis and his team at DeepMind have significantly contributed to the recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence. At the age of 50, he co-founded DeepMind, which was sold to Google in 2014, enabling him to spearhead an array of innovative projects.
Notable achievements include the development of the AlphaGo system, which successfully mastered the ancient Chinese board game Go, as well as AlphaFold, a groundbreaking program that accurately predicts the three-dimensional structures of proteins. The latter innovation earned Hassabis a shared Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2024.
A former Google executive remarked that this leadership transition signals DeepMind’s closer integration with its parent company based in Mountain View, California.
The reins of DeepMind will now be handed over to Hassabis’s long-time associate, the US-based Koray Kavukcuoglu, who will serve as senior vice president rather than a traditional CEO.
“The era of DeepMind as an independent entity has concluded,” the former executive stated. “The shift from a charismatic founder to appointing Koray, who is more technical in nature than inspirational, signals a transformation.”
Amid concerns about the competitive landscape, there is a sense of unease regarding Google’s flagship AI model, Gemini, which has recently faltered in comparison to rivals created by US firms Anthropic and OpenAI, a situation that many insiders find “galling” for both the company and Hassabis himself.
Despite these challenges, Hassabis expressed enthusiasm for focusing on the broader implications of AI, confident that he was entrusting a well-prepared team for the escalating challenges that lie ahead.
Internally, DeepMind has been a turbulent environment. Employees have voiced concerns regarding the company’s collaborations with the Pentagon.
Earlier this year, a former DeepMind staff member initiated legal action against Google, claiming wrongful termination linked to their stance on the Gaza situation.
This employee was previously active in unionization efforts, motivated by fears that Google’s AI technology could be utilized by military entities, including the Israel Defense Forces.
Another DeepMind employee resigned in mid-July, citing ethical issues surrounding the firm’s work with both the Pentagon and the US Department of Homeland Security.
One employee characterized Hassabis’s exit as the “end of an era,” lamenting that the individual once entrusted with aligning AI outputs for humanity has stepped away, asserting that DeepMind has now merely become a subdivision of Google.
Rosa Curling, executive director of the advocacy group Foxglove, which supported the former employee’s legal actions, expressed that “the departure of a co-founder from a firm that once championed ethical practices is likely to exacerbate wariness among its pioneering AI staff regarding the practical applications of their work.”
In response, Google has stated its commitment to a consensus within the private and public sectors against the utilization of AI for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons systems without appropriate human oversight.
While Google has refrained from recognizing a union in London voluntarily, it emphasizes valuing productive dialogue with employees for fostering a successful workplace.
On the commercial front, Google has faced delays in releasing the new Gemini 3.5 Pro model, reportedly due to ongoing enhancements aimed at improving its code-writing capabilities—a significant selling point for competitors like Anthropic and OpenAI.
Under Hassabis’s leadership, Google’s two AI labs, DeepMind in London and Google Brain in California, amalgamated three years ago; however, authority has evidently shifted back to the US, where Google co-founder Sergey Brin is allegedly assuming a more substantial role in AI development.
A former executive noted that the departure of well-regarded researchers like Yann LeCun from Meta and Geoffrey Hinton from Google symbolizes “the end of an era within the AI landscape.”
This shift highlights the reality that the research-driven missions of these labs are yielding to the financial imperatives of corporations eager to recoup investments in AI, which are quantified in the hundreds of billions. Hassabis has advocated for a US regulatory body to evaluate advanced AI models.

He is keenly enthusiastic and sees it as an opportunity to dedicate more time to scientific advancements in AI,” while asserting that the leadership adjustments are unrelated to Gemini’s performance.
The announcement coincided with the exit of Jeff Dean, a distinguished engineer at Google and chief scientist at DeepMind, who is departing along with three other senior researchers to establish an AI startup named Discovery Loop.
A former Google employee suggested that Dean’s departure might foreshadow additional personnel changes.
Another significant exit occurred when OpenAI recruited Noam Shazeer, a prominent figure in AI research and co-author of the pivotal 2017 paper “Attention Is All You Need,” which laid the groundwork for chatbot technology.
“This poses significant challenges for Google,” remarked Jeremy Nixon, formerly an AI researcher at Google and founder of the Infinity Artificial Intelligence Institute, a startup.

“There’s a risk associated with who Jeff may choose to hire next, compounded by the fact that his presence was pivotal in attracting talent; Google is no longer the only destination for those wishing to collaborate with exemplary researchers.”
Nixon further described Dean as an “angelic diplomat” adept at navigating complex organizational landscapes.
Google, however, disputes the notion of a post-Dean talent crisis, citing that the attrition rates for AI experts during the first half of the year remain lower compared to the previous year.
If artificial intelligence is indeed at a pivotal juncture, Google is experiencing a transformative moment of its own.
