Apple is broadening the horizons of CarPlay by integrating it into maritime vessels through a collaboration with pontoon manufacturers.
Additionally, it has established an agreement to facilitate clipboard functionalities between Windows systems and iPhones.
CarPlay Expands from Automobiles to Pontoon Boats
This maritime initiative involves two pontoon brands under MasterCraft Boat Holdings: Crest and Balise. These brands will incorporate CarPlay and Android Auto as standard features across their offerings.
Beginning with the 2027 model year, all new releases of Balise, along with Crest’s Conquest and Caribbean series, will include this technology.
Apple has strategically partnered with the marine navigation application Savvy Navvy, which delivers navigational charts directly to the helm display.
This functionality is particularly advantageous for mariners who meticulously plan their excursions prior to departure.
Jelte Liebrand, founder and CEO of Savvy Navvy, emphasized that boat enthusiasts “have long sought a contemporary infotainment system,” noting that a route planned ashore becomes accessible at the helm upon boarding.
The display’s capabilities extend to showcasing CarPlay functionalities, which include day, night, or satellite charts, 2D or 3D perspective views, live estimated time of arrival (ETA), speed metrics, marina and anchorage searches, saved waypoints, proximity alerts for vessel traffic, and shared locations among friends on the water.
The inaugural compatible boats are set to launch next month, with dealers participating in live demonstrations during Crest Marine’s annual dealer convention.
In November 2025, Cryptopolitan reported that even Tesla, despite years of CEO Elon Musk’s resistance, has commenced internal trials for standard CarPlay.
Notably, a McKinsey study from 2024 revealed that approximately one-third of consumers consider the absence of CarPlay a dealbreaker.
The same report indicated General Motors’ intent to phase out CarPlay, while Audi and Mercedes-Benz are retreating from the premium CarPlay Ultra offerings.
Microsoft’s EU Initiative Unlocks iPhone’s Clipboard
Apple has consented to allow for the seamless transfer of content from iPhones to Windows PCs, and vice versa, effectively bridging a long-standing gap.
This development arises from Microsoft’s interoperability request filed under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act on March 25, 2026.
Previously, there was no counterpart to Apple’s Universal Clipboard, which synchronizes copied text across its own devices. Microsoft sought an efficient, low-friction synchronization process.
Apple responded on April 27, indicating that the request had progressed but warned of potential challenges in delivering a solution that would not jeopardize either its operating system integrity or intellectual property.
However, on June 26, Apple retracted this cautionary stance, confirming its commitment to developing a functional solution while outlining its conceptual framework.
Both the clipboard turnaround and Apple’s meticulous language are anchored in Article 6(7) of the DMA, which empowers developers within the EU to request access to iOS hardware and software functionalities.
According to Apple’s developer documentation, the procedure entails an eligibility assessment within 20 working days, followed by the formulation of a project plan and subsequent development.
This structure suggests that the clipboard feature could potentially be more restricted within the EU than on a global scale.
From a technical standpoint, Apple maintains that the clipboard tool will employ the same protocols as its Accessory Notifications and Accessory Live Activities frameworks introduced in iOS 26.5.
Microsoft intends to utilize AccessorySetupKit, the pairing system that Meta contested in its own EU inquiry.
Users will need to provide consent once for each device. Apple described the undertaking as a “significant engineering effort,” expressing hopes to complete development by the autumn of 2027, followed by a beta phase for developers.
