San Francisco: Apple Exceeds Market Projections in Final Earnings Report Under Tim Cook

Apple Inc. has impressed market analysts with its latest financial performance, culminating in what is anticipated to be Tim Cook’s last earnings report as CEO, marked by substantial growth in both iPhone and Mac sales.

For the period spanning April to June, the tech behemoth based in Cupertino reported a remarkable 16 percent increase in sales, amounting to $109.4 billion, while profits surged 27 percent to reach $29.8 billion.

The company’s impressive results can be attributed to a vigorous demand for iPhones, a significant recovery in the Chinese market, and notable growth across all global regions where it operates.

The financial performance was further amplified by the reversal of tariffs reinstated last year under the Trump administration, which were annulled by the US Supreme Court in February.

iPhone sales soared by 22 percent to an impressive $54.3 billion, as consumers increasingly opted to upgrade to the latest iterations, while revenue from Mac sales grew by 29 percent.

Although Apple’s services sector—including platforms such as the App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, and advertising—experienced a 12 percent growth to $30.7 billion, this figure fell short of market expectations.

Following the announcement, Apple shares dipped nearly five percent in after-hours trading, primarily due to the underwhelming performance of the services segment.

“Today, Apple is elated to announce our strongest June quarter to date, with robust double-digit revenue growth across iPhone, Mac, and Services, as well as in every geographical area,” Cook articulated in a statement.

This earnings report is expected to mark the conclusion of Cook’s tenure as chief executive.

CEO Transition

Effective September 1, John Ternus will assume the role of Apple’s CEO, with Cook stepping into the position of executive chairman of the board.

Since taking the helm in 2011, Cook has navigated the company through various challenges, including the period just before the passing of co-founder Steve Jobs.

Despite criticisms regarding its pace in the artificial intelligence sector, Apple has garnered positive responses on Wall Street for its cautious investment strategy compared to its tech counterparts.

This week, Apple achieved a remarkable milestone by reaching a $5 trillion market capitalization, while its competitors—Meta, Google, and Microsoft—have seen their share prices decline amid investor skepticism about the profitability of their extensive AI investments.

Notably, Meta’s stock plummeted approximately nine percent on Thursday after results sparked concerns about its spending trajectory.

Conversely, Microsoft’s shares surged following indications that its AI investments are beginning to yield dividends, highlighting a clear advantage for Apple’s more measured approach.

A looming concern for Apple is the escalating prices of memory chips, an essential component in electronic devices.

In June, Apple raised the prices for its Mac computers and iPad tablets, attributing the hikes to surging costs of memory and storage driven by the burgeoning demand for artificial intelligence technologies, though it spared the iPhone from similar increases.

Looking ahead, attention is now on how Apple will position its pricing strategy for the upcoming lineup of smartphones, which is anticipated to debut in September and may include a foldable model.

A foldable smartphone is displayed partially open on a metal tray beside a closed phone, both featuring metallic finishes and app icons on the screens.

This week, the company also unveiled Apple Upgrade, a leasing initiative that allows US customers to finance an iPhone or other devices through manageable monthly installments.
