The Pursuit of Preferred Smartphones Amid Price Hikes in India

Despite an uptick in smartphone prices, 46 percent of Indian consumers planning a purchase within the next six months are prepared to extend their financial limits to acquire their desired devices, according to a recent report released on Friday.

The latest consumer survey from Counterpoint Research reveals that the purchasing behaviors of Indian consumers are adapting amid escalating manufacturing and component expenses, which are exerting pressure on smartphone pricing.

This trend is particularly prevalent among individuals aged 25 to 30, with 52 percent showing readiness to adjust their budgets.

Notably, this inclination is somewhat more pronounced among Tier-I consumers. This demographic indicates a willingness not only to stretch their financial thresholds but also to explore affordability-driven payment plans or even shift between ecosystems to secure their ideal smartphones.

Furthermore, the report indicates that 29 percent of consumers plan to adhere to their budgets by either purchasing within their financial constraints or opting for refurbished devices.

This trend is especially evident among the older demographic, with 34 percent of respondents over 50 exhibiting this behavior.

Conversely, 25 percent of prospective smartphone buyers within the next six months express a willingness to defer their purchases should prices escalate.

Many of these individuals plan to either prolong the use of their current devices or seek repairs to extend their lifespan. Such inclinations are more commonly observed among homemakers and students.

As dependence on smartphones intensifies, consumers are developing a sharper awareness of the features and experiences that matter most to them.

In this climate, price hikes are prompting shifts in purchasing strategies, thereby presenting opportunities for brands that resonate strongly, especially within the mid-to-premium sector, stated Arushi Chawla, Senior Analyst.

Chawla further noted that brands with a diverse portfolio spanning various price ranges are poised to gain from this trend.

Simultaneously, the growing awareness of rising smartphone costs is shaping consumer expectations for the 2026 festive season.

Buyers are increasingly seeking substantive value through discounts, exchange deals, financing options, and other affordability-driven promotions prior to making their purchase decision, she elaborated.

The uncertainty surrounding escalating smartphone costs amplifies the importance of retailers as decisive influences on purchasing choices, as highlighted in the report.

Additionally, longer replacement cycles underscore the necessity for robust after-sales support to cultivate sustained value, while flexible financing and affordability-focused payment mechanisms are crucial in counterbalancing the effects of price increases and fostering conversions.

This consumer survey, conducted by Counterpoint Research among 2,095 prospective smartphone buyers, encompasses a broad spectrum of demographics spanning gender, city tiers, age groups, and professional backgrounds, offering a thorough insight into how Indian consumers are navigating the shifting smartphone marketplace.
