AI Optimization: A New Era for E-Commerce
Upon the introduction of ChatGPT, Lissimore prompted the large language model (LLM) to assess his website’s audio equipment offerings.
“It didn’t even mention us,” Lissimore recounted in an exclusive interview with Business Insider.
For e-commerce businesses, search results are pivotal, serving as the bedrock for product discovery, customer engagement, and subsequent sales.
Presently, artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the manner in which consumers pursue product recommendations—ranging from the ascent of agentic commerce to how major search engines, such as Google, are fundamentally reconfigured.
“This marks the most significant transition since the inception of search capabilities,” Lissimore asserted.
This realization led to the foundation of his new venture, Lantern, which is firmly committed to enhancing AI optimization for e-commerce brands. “I recognized that many will be floundering, attempting to navigate this transition,” he added.
In the year 2024, Lissimore inaugurated Lantern with the aim of fortifying customer loyalty strategies for e-commerce brands. By 2025, the startup successfully secured $3.1 million in seed funding, spearheaded by Salesforce Ventures.
Since that time, Lantern has recalibrated its focus towards developing tools that assist brands in increasing their visibility within LLMs. To this end, Lissimore recruited former engineers from Amazon to steer the company’s product initiatives.
Currently, Lantern is in the process of raising additional funds to augment its technical workforce, secure tokens, and further market its offerings.
The team at Lantern has designed an internal model that forecasts how a brand’s products may feature in AI-driven queries and suggests actionable steps to enhance that visibility.
The subscription for these tools is priced at $99 per month, with customized rates available for enterprise clients.
As new terminologies such as Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) become prevalent, a multitude of startups is emerging, offering solutions aimed at assisting brands in AI-centric optimization.
Take Jasper AI, for example; it raised an impressive sum exceeding $100 million at the onset of the AI boom, concentrating on marketing tools. Recently, it unveiled an automated GEO tool, showcasing several search optimization capabilities.
Similarly, Daydream, an SEO agency, secured a $15 million Series A funding round this year to enhance its agentic SEO tools and expand its human expertise.
To distinguish Lantern from the expanding array of AI-focused marketing tools, Lissimore emphasized, “Our singular focus is on e-commerce.”
While alternative products may enhance “overall visibility,” Lissimore contended that such metrics are less consequential for specialized e-commerce retailers.

Instead, the primary target for Lantern’s offerings is specific product performance in relation to niche competitors.
Lissimore is acutely aware of his entry into a potentially saturated market.
“It appears that numerous companies are converging in this space,” he noted. “However, I believe this field is poised for immense growth, presenting a plethora of niches and challenges that remain to be addressed.”
