In a significant breach, confidential information about Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 18 Pro has surfaced, revealing supplier lists, component specifications, and internal images.
This leak follows a cyber intrusion at Tata Electronics, a vital manufacturing ally of Apple in India, as per documents examined by Reuters and corroborated by a knowledgeable source.
The ransomware group, World Leaks, notorious for a previous attack on Nike, has purportedly disseminated the leaked documents on the dark web.
While Reuters has yet to independently authenticate the entirety of the documents or procure a response from the hacking entity, the implications are already severe.
Contained within the trove are intricate maps delineating the myriad components slated for the iPhone 18 Pro, clearly linking them to their respective suppliers.
Key parts identified include the chips on the main circuit board, battery elements, and camera modules. Apple’s customary practice involves keeping supplier identities under wraps, rendering this information particularly precarious.
The leaked dossier also discloses Apple’s strategies in sourcing identical components from various suppliers, as well as scenarios where reliance falls on a single manufacturer.
This exposure could spotlight vulnerabilities in Apple’s global supply chain and possibly weaken its bargaining leverage with vendors.
Numerous documents reportedly bear Apple’s confidential insignia along with internal codenames tied to the iPhone 18 Pro generation.
Additionally, the cache features photographs captured during drop-testing at a Tata Electronics facility earlier this year, showcasing what appears to be a gray prototype smartphone displaying Apple’s renowned triple-camera architecture.
Although Reuters has yet to verify the authenticity of the images, a source familiar with the situation has identified it as the iPhone 18 Pro.
The recent data theft builds on an earlier breach involving over 200,000 files pilfered from Tata Electronics.
Earlier leaks encompassed engineering documents pertinent to previous iPhone models and components for Tesla, as well as materials linked to suppliers like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Qualcomm.
Per Reuters, an investigation into the breach is being conducted collaboratively by Apple and Tata, with the Indian manufacturer enhancing internal security protocols, restricting access to sensitive systems, and engaging an international consulting firm to carry out a forensic audit.
This incident emerges at a time when Apple is intensifying its manufacturing operations in India, aiming to diminish its reliance on Chinese production.
According to market research firm Counterpoint, India’s share of global iPhone production is anticipated to rise to approximately 26% this year, up from a meager 6% four years prior.
The leak’s timing is particularly concerning, as it occurs mere months before the expected unveiling of the iPhone 18 lineup, casting shadows over the security of one of Apple’s most meticulously safeguarded product development and supply chain processes.
